Four Goal Holleran Helps Juniors Win Derby
Jun. 20, 2014
JUNIORS: Belnaleck 1-10 v 5-15 Belcoo
A Galway native took centre stage in this local Cleenish derby as Belcoo recorded a 5-15 to 1-10 win over Belnaleck at the Arney venue. Damien Holleran finished the night with 4-2 to his name as a first half hat-trick of goals helped Belcoo into a nine point interval lead. The O'Rahilly's would remain in control during the second period to run out handsome winners.

The game opened with a flurry of scores in the first five minutes. The accurate Chrissy Owens opened the scoring for the hosts but Aaron Dolan and Philip Leonard landed scores before referee Seamus McMahon awarded Belcoo a penalty for overcarrying in the wee square by the Belnaleck goalkeeper. Philip Leonard dispatched the spot kick into the corner. 1-2 to 0-1 with 5minutes played.
The home team would knock over the next three points, Owens tapping over two close range frees with Eamon Brogan also splitting the posts to reduce the deficit to one. Belcoo hit a purple patch midway through the half as they cut open the home defence regularly.
A 14th minute goal from Damien Holleran started the scoring spree for the visitors. Moments later a good one two move between Holleran and Ian Corrigan seen the latter drill over before Holleran pointed after a neat interchange on the wing with Philip Leonard.
Gerard Mellor was controlling the middle sector and his break set Barry McGovern scampering forward from corner back, McGovern's wonderful through ball to Holleran was well taken before Holleran side stepped the goalkeeper to add a second goal.
The next score was another Holleran goal, a third in six minutes. Declan Leonard doing well in the build up to flick a high ball toward Holleran who made no mistake when bearing down goal to make it 4-4 to 0-4 after 20minutes.
Aaron Dolan could have added a fifth goal but opted to fist a point when through on goal before Belnaleck had a good end to the half registering 1-3. Dermot Lewsley powerful low drive beating Jack O'Dolan in the Belcoo goals while Chrissy Owens (2) and James Corrigan added points. Prior to the break Philip Leonard and Aaron Dolan had knocked over scores to leave Belcoo 4-7 to 1-7 in front.
The second period never reached the level of the first as both sets of players tired and were wasteful in front of goal. The opening twenty minutes yielded just six points as both sides shared three each, Gary Maguire (free), Leonard and Dolan on target for Belcoo while Bryan Owens and Chrissy Owens (2) hit the Belnaleck points.
Belcoo would finish the game the stronger running in 1-5 to no score. Holleran on target from the left, Ian Corrigan, Matthew McAloon, Aidan McGrath and Aaron Dolan all pointing before substitute Aidan McKenna was brought down late on for a late penalty which Damien Holleran coolly slotted into the corner giving Belcoo a 17point victory.
