Late Goal Gets Juniors A Draw
Aug. 31, 2014
JUNIORS: Derrylin 2-10 v 3-7 Belcoo
Belcoo Juniors snatched a draw with the final play of the game in Derrylin on Sunday afternoon as Aaron Dolan fisted a goal in added time. Derrylin will feel hard done by as they led from the 9th minute until the final second.
It was Belcoo who began with a quickfire 1-1. Declan Leonard pointing from the throw up before Niall Cullen’s effort for a point dropped into the net. Belcoo though would just score one point over the remaining 28minutes of the first period, Cullen the scorer despite a number of efforts at goal.
The hosts dominated the first half and responded well to Belcoo’s start with a goal in the third minute themselves. Ferghal Shannon’s mazy run opening up the visitors defence before he fed Aaron McGoldrick who drilled into the net.
Mark Shannon and McGoldrick added points before Ferghal Shannon netted his sides second goal with just 7minutes on the clock to leave it 2-2 to 1-2.
After a frantic start the pace of the game dropped and scores became sporadic. Ferghal Shannon would add a good point before he was forced off with an injury. Points from Eugene Maguire and Mark Shannon had the O’Connells 2-5 to 1-2 up at the break but it could have been more as Aidan Leonard made a fine save in the Belcoo goals coming to half time.
Stephen Curry extended this sides lead to seven after the restart but Belcoo would hit 1-3 before Derrylin would register again. Gary Maguire pointing two frees while a short free seen Matthew McAloon score.
The Belcoo goal arrived on 40minutes when Damian Holleran’s driving run and shot rebounded to Gerard Mellor who’s effort was saved before Holleran tucked the loose ball into the net reducing the deficit to one, 2-6 to 2-5.
Derrylin would outscore Belcoo four to one in the next 10minutes to move 2-10 to 2-6 ahead with just three minutes remaining. James Lee, Brendan Gilleece, Aaron McGoldrick and Mark Shannon on target with Gary Maguire’s free Belcoo’s sole score.
In the closing moments Belcoo piled on the pressure and Aaron Dolan conjured up a point before fisting a goal to end a sweeping move involving Declan Leonard and Aaron Leonard to snatch a draw.
