St. Pat's Beat Seniors In Last League Game
Sep. 6, 2014
SENIORS: St. Pat's 2-10 v 0-11 Belcoo
Two Brian McDermott goals was enough to send St. Pat’s into the league Semi Finals with a 2-10 to 0-11 victory over Belcoo in Donagh on Saturday evening. The defeat for the O’Rahilly’s sees them finish 8th as Teemore didn’t field against Erne Gaels who jumped above Belcoo to take 7th as a result. The finishing position of Belcoo means that within 11 months of contesting the Senior Championship Final they have been downgraded and will contest the 2015 Intermediate Championship.
FINAL 2014 SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1 TABLE
On Saturday’s game goals at crucial times ensured St. Pat’s remained in control of this tie and the Donagh outfit would never be headed. The opening seven minutes yielded six scores. Gary Maguire registering two great points from distance for the host while Eamon Maguire was also on target from play. Jonathan Feeley had hit two frees for Belcoo before St. Pat’s registered their first goal.
Belcoo were within 30yards of the home goals when they coughed up possession, the hosts swiftly transferred the ball downfield to the lively Brian McDermott at corner forward and he tore in towards goal and fired past Daniel Ray in the Belcoo goals.
There was a lull in proceedings before Feeley registered from play for Belcoo however two points within a minute from Eamon and Gary Maguire had St. Pat’s 1-5 to 0-3 ahead. During the closing stages of the opening half Ryan Leonard got forward to score what was the last point of the half as his side trailed by 4points at the interval.
Ryan Daly and Feeley exchanged points early in the second half and whilst Belcoo were having the bulk of possession they couldn’t raise the white or green flags. The visitors should have had a goal but Declan Leonard’s pass was just too far in front of James McGrath who tried to palm it into the net, the ball trickling wide with the Michael McGrade beaten. A goal at this juncture would have reduced the deficit to one.
St. Pat’s on the other hand were much more clinical going forward and they would see McDermott and Gary Maguire add points before they added goal number two. Again, Belcoo contributed to their own downfall giving away possession in an advanced area allowing St. Pat’s to counter and when Brian McDermott got through on goal he made no mistake finding the net again. 13minutes to play it was 2-9 to 0-5.
Belcoo made a good fist of it over the closing quarter, second half substitute Shane McCabe pointed while Feeley added some neat scores from play and dead balls. Brian Cox also drilled over a point and despite hitting the crossbar late on with a goal effort Belcoo had left themselves too much to do.
