Apr. 18, 2015

ERNE CUP DIVISION 2: Belcoo 6-14 v 3-4 St. Joseph's

Belcoo Juniors were to record their first win of the year with a strong showing at home to Ederney, running out winners on a 6-14 to 3-4 scoreline. The O’Rahilly’s made an incredible start with two goals in as many minutes although Ederney battled back to trail by five at the interval, the second half was a one sided affair.

The first attack of the tie seen Belcoo cut through the St. Joseph’s defence and Ronan Meehan’s close range effort for point dipped over the goalkeepers head into the net. Moments later Aaron Dolan fired into the net from close range and Belcoo were off to a flying start.

Barry McGovern would add a point before St. Joseph’s opened their account with a point with 8minutes played. The hosts were getting plenty of space in this 13 a side game, Declan Leonard, Barry McGovern and Gerard Mellor in particular seeing alot of the ball. Aaron Dolan knocked over a point and a maurading run from full back Aidan Leonard also led to a fine effort splitting the posts.

St. Joseph’s would register a goal but from the kickout Declan Leonard won possession and powered forward before slipping the ball to Gary Maguire who netted. Belcoo continued to hold sway and two Barry McGovern points extended their advantage.

Despite dominating long periods Belcoo would just lead by five at half time. The hosts lost their way coming to the end of the half, Patrick Sweeney was forced to make two good saves however the visitors did add a goal and two points to leave it 3-5 to 2-3.

In the second period Belcoo quickly established their position again, Ronan Meehan and Aaron Dolan pointed early on. The scores continued to flow with Ian Corrigan and two more Dolan points sending Belcoo into a comfortable lead at 3-10 to 2-3. St. Joseph’s would hit a goal and point but Belcoo would finish the last quarter very strongly.

Aaron Dolan squandered two one on one chances early in the half before eventually scoring his goal. Gary Maguire added a point before Martin Corrigan joined the attack from corner back to score a rare point.

Jack O’Dolan was introduced to the fray and quickly made his mark with a well struck point before firing in a goal from close range minutes later. Ian Corrigan would clip over a neat score and the contest was finished with a Dean McDermott goal, a tame effort somehow beating the St. Joseph’s goalkeeper.
