Devenish Win U14 Derby
Apr. 21, 2015
U14: Devenish 6-13 v 3-4 Belcoo
Belcoo U14’s produced a spirited display in Garrison on Tuesday evening but the hosts were too strong for the young O’Rahilly’s and although it was a tighter contest than the scoreline suggests Devenish were worthy winners on the night.
Belcoo would come back into the tie after an awful opening couple of minutes seen Devenish register 2-2. Odhran Flanagan and Caolan Feeley done the bulk of the scoring all night for the home team and they were quickly out of the blocks. Belcoo though were architects of their own downfall at times, the first goal a comedy of errors at the back before the ball was bundled into the net.
Lawrence McKeown would land Belcoo’s opening point from distance after a quickly taken free from Oran McCann although Odhran Flanagan was continuing to drive forward at great pace to hammer over some more points. Feeley would thunder in another goal but by the midway stage Belcoo were beginning to stem the tide and impose themselves.
An excellent move involving Dara Flanagan, Gerry Nolan and Josh Killilea seen Belcoo make good ground up the field before Killilea’s excellent ball through to Fiachra McAloon allowed the wing forward to run through and finish with a low shot into the corner. 3-4 to 1-1 at this juncture.
Belcoo continued to hold the upperhand as the penned back Devenish, some good opportunities in front of goal were missed as four shots in as many minutes all failed to raise the white flag. Undeterred a goal was to come as the hard working Gerry Nolan nicked the ball off a defender before finishing well. Oran McCann would knock over a point as Belcoo got to within four points at 3-4 to 2-2.
Devenish would regain a footing in the tie and Odhran Flanagan fired in a goal via the inside of the post after another powerful run. He would register two points before the break as well to take his sides tally to 4-6 while Belcoo were to end the half with 3-2 to their name.
With the final act of the half Josh Killilea was sent through one on one before being abrupted haulted for a penalty. Lawrence McKeown stroked the penalty into the net to leave seven between the sides at the break.
In the second half Belcoo started well and despite 10minutes of pressure they only registered a two points, Oran McCann with both from free kicks. From here to the finish Devenish took control, Odhran Flanagan and Caolan Feeley worked a number of one two’s to score a string of points, Odhran O’Loughlin tapped in a close range goal while Jamie Ray was busy making a number of good saves to keep the score down.
There was good showings from a number of the young O’Rahilly’s, Conor McKeown and Colum Higgins kept their corner forwards quiet throughout, Dara Flanagan, Oisin O’Loughlin, Lawrence McKeown and Matthew Mulvey worked hard with Fiachra McAloon, Josh Killilea and Gerry Nolan lively in attack.
