Impressive Display Gives Seniors Victory
May. 3, 2015
SENIORS: Ederney 0-14 v 1-15 Belcoo
The seniors produced their best display of the season so far as they returned from Ederney with a four point victory on a 1-15 to 0-14 score line. The O'Rahilly's played some scintillating football at times as they powered forward to clip over some fine points in what was an absorbing contest.
The visitors were off the mark early through a Jonathan Feeley free which Manus Maguire cancelled out and John Doran pointed to gave the hosts the lead for the first time.
Belcoo would hit the games only goal on 9minutes, an incisive move at pace through the middle ending with Brian Cox firing a low shot into the bottom corner. Ederney almost responded in kind moments later, Paul McCusker smacking the crossbar after a quickly taken free had caught the Belcoo defence unaware.
McCusker would fire over two from play before Marty McGrath fisted a point as Ederney made up for the goal they conceded. Belcoo had registered two from play with Paul McGrath and John Carrigan on target having both cut through the defence to tap over to tie the game at 1-3 to 0-6.
The hosts would see Paul McCusker clip over two frees however Belcoo took control for the last 10minutes of the half to end it with five unanswered points.
Niall McGovern, John Carrigan and Shane McCabe were winning primary possession in the middle sector to keep the pressure on the hosts. Paul McGrath adding two more from play as did Ciaran Flaherty, his second a wonderful piece of strong running and long range effort while Jonathan Feeley knocked over a free as Belcoo held the interval lead 1-8 to 0-8.
It was somewhat sluggish opening to the second half by Belcoo as they lost possession on a number of occasions. Ederney had managed to reduce the deficit to one with John Doran and Aaron Dennison hitting scores.
Belcoo though took command again, Niall McGovern and John Carrigan catching clean ball in the middle. Jonathan Feeley knocked over a free while Paul McGrath clipped over from play after a good run from Flaherty.
Substitute Aaron Dolan would fire over a superb effort from close to sideline (possibly letting her in but we can give him the benefit of the doubt) as Belcoo moved 1-11 to 0-10 ahead.
Defensively the O'Rahilly's were curtailing Mark Henry's side well, Ryan McGovern and Shane McCabe making diving blocks on occasions while the Leonard trio Niall, Declan and Ryan were forcing their men into shots under pressure.
Paul McCusker would score two more frees for the hosts but Paul McGrath and Jonathan Feeley replied in kind. 1-13 to 0-12.
In the closing stages the McCusker brothers Paul and Darren added frees but Belcoo had enough in hand, they finished with two well taken Feeley points from play to secure what was a hard earned, but deserved victory.
