Juniors Rally For Deserved Draw
May. 17, 2015
JUNIORS: Belcoo 2-13 v 3-10 Irvinestown
Belcoo juniors continued their good run with a late rally to ensure they took a point from this home game with Irvinestown. The visitors registering a goal two minutes from time to lead by two but late points from Declan Leonard and Aaron Dolan left it 2-13 to 3-10 at full time.
Following a rather drab opening half the second 30minutes proved to be engrossing affair. Belcoo trailed 1-6 to 1-3 at the interval as they were slowing into their stride, Irvinestown hitting the first five points. Belcoo did hit the post with Kieran Conlon going for goal but it was some 18minutes before they registered, Aaron Dolan with a free before Ian Corrigan netted a goal after a mistake from the visiting goalkeeper.
Aaron Dolan and Emmet Scollan both added points before the break, two of Belcoo’s best players on the day. With the final attack of the first half Brendan McPartland conceded a penalty, Jerome Carleton confidentially dispatched past Aidan Leonard.

Three down at the break Belcoo quickly reversed that within four minutes during a bright opening to the second half, Emmet Scollan finding Gary Doherty with a great pass, Doherty caught the ball well before firing over a good point. Seconds later Belcoo had hit their second goal, Scollan and Doherty again combining before Philip Leonard’s effort for a point was fisted into the net by Dean McDermott. Aidan McGrath’s quickly taken free allowed Aaron Dolan to score and Belcoo had turned the game on its head to lead 2-5 to 1-6.
That lead didn’t last long, Jerome Carleton fisting a goal for Irvinestown but Belcoo were now on top and playing some good football. Barry McGovern would feed Aaron Dolan, his strong run finished with a neat point before Scollan, McGrath and Doherty exchanged passes for the latter to drill over. 41minutes on the clock and Belcoo held the lead, 2-7 to 2-6.
Emmet Scollan would point a free but Irvinestown replied with two in a row to tie the game. Dean McDermott and Carleton exchanged points and with 7minutes to play it was 2-9 a piece. An Irvinestown point would be sandwiched between Ronan Meehan and Emmett Scollan points as Belcoo looked destined for the win however full forward Jerome Carleton thumped in his third goal with just two minutes remaining shifting the visitors two clear, 3-10 to 2-11.

Belcoo managed to muster a response over the closing moments, Declan Leonard a late substitute splitting the posts from distance before Aaron Dolan done likewise from a similar position. In the end a draw probably was a fair reflection of the game, Martin Corrigan was excellent at the back for the O’Rahilly’s, Aidan McGrath done well while Emmet Scollan, Aaron Dolan and Gary Doherty providing the attacking threat.
Up next is an away game in Maguiresbridge on Friday night at 7.45pm.
