Good Challenge For U12s

Jul. 14, 2015

U12 Challenge: Belcoo 3-7 (13) v 6-10 (22) Kinawley

The Under 12's had an encouraging outing in a Challenge game on Tuesday evening against a good Kinawley side from Section A. The O’Rahilly’s were well in the contest throughout, a scoring spurt from the visitors in the third quarter enough to see them through to victory.

Belcoo would open the scoring with a Jack Greene point after good work down the left from Gerry Nolan and Josh Killilea. Kinawley had missed a few chances to score before Belcoo this their first but the visitors soon found the target with three points but Gerry Nolan and Josh Killilea did likewise to level matters. Jamie Ray was impressing in the home goal and was unfortunate to concede a goal having made an initial save from an attacker who snapped up the rebound to hit the net. With goals only counting as 2points, Belcoo trailed by that margin at the end of Quarter 1: Belcoo 0-3 v 1-3 Kinawley.

Belcoo had to defend for large parts of the opening quarter but in Quarter 2 the young O’Rahilly’s were on top, Colum Higgins, Conor McKeown, Ciana McGrath and Daniel O’Connor all sticking to their tasks, pressurising their opposition into wayward shots. At the other end Killilea was the architect of a number of chances for Jack Greene and Patrick Martin, both was showing much better in this period of the game, Martin was rewarded with two points while Greene found the net. A late rally coming to half time seen Kinawley also score 1-2, Jamie Ray again made a number of good saves in this quarter which was tied meaning two points remained between the sides at the interval. Half Time: Belcoo 1-5 v 2-5 Kinawley.

It was Quarter 3 where Kinawley kicked on to register 3-3 to Belcoo’s 1-1. The visitors nippy forwards were proving hard to handle while Belcoo squandered some great chances at the other end. Kinawley worked a sublime first touch move the length of the field before finding the net for one of their three goals. Oisin O’Loughlin would plunder a goal from close range for Belcoo while Josh Killilea landed a 45 as this period ended with Kinawley 8points to the good: Belcoo 2-6 v 5-8.

In the final Quarter Belcoo worked hard, Aine Barrett and Sean Boylan done well in the early part before tiring while Conor McKeown excelled in defence with Ciana McGrath and Colum Higgins continuing to do well. Jack Greene was getting on a lot of ball as Belcoo looked to find some scores. Oisin O'Loughlin missed a guilt edged goal opportunity while the Kinawley 'keeper kept out a low shot from Killilea and he also saved a penalty from the same player. Killilea though would fire in the 1-1  in this period for his side, the goal a thunderous effort within a minute of seeing a penalty saved. Kinawley though would eek out a 1point win in this quarter to seal a 9point success overall. Full Time: Belcoo 3-7 v 6-10 Kinawley.

In the second game, a much strong Kinawley side ran out winners, Lorcan Leonard done well in the Belcoo goals with Sinead Barrett, Niamh McAloon, Aoife Keaney and Eoin Corrigan working hard.

All in all it was a good outing for Belcoo as they go into their Section B league opener against Teemore on Saturday. Training continues Thursday from 7pm to 8.15pm.
