Super Second Half Sees Juniors Beat Irvinestown
Jul. 15, 2015
Juniors: Irvinestown 0-8 v 2-16 Belcoo
At half time in this Junior league game just one point separated the sides as Belcoo held a 0-6 to 0-5 lead before a superb second half showing seen the O’Rahilly’s run riot to record a 14point victory on a scoreline of 2-16 to 0-8.
The first period was keenly contested although Belcoo had been dominant in most areas without really coming out of first gear. Gerard Mellor and Seamus Conlon were in total control around the middle winning clean ball on both their own and opposition kick outs. Aaron Dolan was deadly accurate hitting three points from his three free kick attempts while also adding a point from play to move Belcoo 0-4 to 0-3 ahead by the 20minute mark.
Kieran Conlon was showing well in the corner and his smart pass into Ian Corrigan set up a goal chance, Corrigan though blazed over recording another point as Belcoo kept the pressure on with Mellor and Conlon continuing to control centrefield.
James Gillespie would clip over a point after good work by Aidan McGrath while Irvinestown managed two late points to cut the deficit to one. Before the break Sweeney was again on hand to save a certain goal after Daniel Ray dwelt on the ball.
The second half was less that 20seconds old when Belcoo raised the white flag, Seamus Conlon winning the throw up before finding Ian Corrigan with a long ball, Corrigan swivelled to find the posts. This was the start of a very profitable period for the visitors.
Dean McDermott done well from wing back in a lung bursting run but fired wide going for goal, from the kickout Mellor won possession, offloaded to Conlon who again picked out Corrigan in front and another point was the outcome. Conlon would then land a good score himself and within three minutes of the restart Belcoo were now four points ahead, 0-9 to 0-5.
As Belcoo took the foot of the pedal Irvinestown hit three in five minutes to get back to one point, from here to the finish Belcoo bossed the contest, scoring a massive 2-7 without reply.
In the 42nd minute Aaron Dolan fired over a 45, within 60seconds, Gerard Mellor had won the kickout, feed Ian Corrigan who thundered a low drive into the net. The onslaught continued, Kieran Conlon, Aaron Dolan and Gary Maguire all banging over quick scores.
Irvinestown were trying to muster a response but Belcoo were defending extremely well, the returning Shane McAloon, making a first appearance of the season was excellent at full back with Niall Cullen and Brian Furey coming out with plenty of ball also. Aidan McGrath was a steadying influence at centre back with Daniel Ray and Brendan McPartland also providing good outlets for their side.
With 15minutes to play it was 1-12 to 0-8. Belcoo continued to pick holes in the Irvinestown defence as the fight went from the hosts. Gary Maguire hit two more from play with Aaron Dolan doing likewise before Dolan scored a great goal after a neat flick on by Kieran Conlon to see Belcoo through to a comfortable victory in the end.
Next Junior fixture is this Saturday, home to Maguiresbridge, throw in 6.30pm.
