Bad Goals Costly As Juniors Beaten
Jul. 19, 2015
JUNIORS: Belcoo 1-13 v 5-9 Maguiresbridge
Belcoo Juniors were undone by a very sloppy opening to this tie where they conceded three soft goals in the first seven minutes which proved the difference in the end despite a spirited fightback in the second half.
The O’Rahilly’s would hit the first score when Dean McDermott clipped over a good point but three minutes of madness seen Maguiresbridge register three goals. Sean Corrigan accounting for the first two as he waltzed unchallenged through the home defence before finding the net. Martin Corrigan would then gift Matthew Martin a goal having played the ball across the goalmouth straight to the attacker. Sean Corrigan would land a first point for the visitors who held a 3-1 to 0-1 lead with just 7minutes on the clock.
The in suing ten minutes seen Maguiresbridge chip over a few points as the game continued to be error ridden in what was a difficult swirling wind while the rain also pelted down. Belcoo would eventually enjoy a good spell in front of goal and they fired in 1-3 in six minutes coming to half time.
Philip Leonard’s long ball into the square was fisted to the net by Mark Corrigan before Ian Corrigan pointed twice and Gary Maguire drilled over to cut the deficit to five points. The O’Rahilly’s good work was undone in the final few seconds of the half as the visitors Matthew Martin beat Patrick Sweeney and Brendan McPartland to a high ball resulting in a fourth goal. Another point was added and the interval seen Maguiresbridge lead 4-5 to 1-4.
Belcoo made a bright opening to the second half and hit the first four points of the period. Ian Corrigan fisting over a Philip Leonard free that dropped short. Mark Corrigan was next to find the target after good work by Kieran Conlon and Gary Maguire, Corrigan blazing over with the goals at his mercy.
Gary Maguire would gather a miscued kickout from the Maguiresbridge goalkeeper to land a point while a great ball from Gerard Mellor released Daniel Ray down the left, he in turn kicked a great point from distance.
Sean Corrigan would land two frees for the visitors but it was Belcoo who continued to force the issue. Mark Corrigan and Philip Leonard pointing to leave it 4-7 to 1-10 with 10minutes to play. Any hopes of a full revival went out the window with a fifth Maguiresbridge goal. Again it was outrageously soft. A very tame shot from Garbhan McPhillips deflected off Martin Corrigan and looped over Patrick Sweeney in thee Belcoo goals.
In the closing stages James Gillespie, Philip Leonard and Dean McDermott hit points that were no more than consolation efforts as Maguiresbridge seven point win, the goals a the killer as the O’Rahilly’s lost out on this occasion.
