Comfortable Championship Win For Juniors
Aug. 22, 2015
Reserve B Championship: Belcoo 1-17 v 0-11 Erne Gaels
Belcoo Juniors eased to a comfortable 1-17 to 0-11 Championship victory over Erne Gaels in Garrison on Saturday evening. This Preliminary Round encounter took its time to get going but a flurry of scores late in the first half had Belcoo nine points to the good at the interval and from there they never looked in any danger.
The opening exchanges were error ridden by both sides but Belcoo were defending well, Brendan McPartland in particular coming out in front on a number of occasions with good interceptions. By the mid point in the half the O’Rahilly’s had a 0-3 to 0-1 lead. The shooting left a bit to be desired however Kieran Conlon did hit a fine opening score before Aaron Dolan followed up with a close range free and Gary Maguire tapped over from the left wing.
Belcoo would register their goal on 17minutes, a long range shot at a score from Gary Doherty was partially blocked and fell into the arms of Gary Maguire 14yards from goal, he tucked the ball into the corner to hoist his side five clear.
The goal had livened the winners up, Seamus Conlon and Gerard Mellor were dominating the middle of the field, James Gillespie was seeing alot of the ball coming forward to support play while Matthew McAloon came to the fore in front of goals, kicking two good points after strong surging runs.
Aaron Dolan, Gary Doherty and Ian Corrigan were also on target prior to the interval and the second half was to follow a similar pattern. Belcoo were on top and continued to clip over points. McAloon added two more from play with Gary Maguire also splitting the posts.
Erne Gaels had mustered the odd foray forward to hit a few scores but Patrick Sweeney was doing well under the high ball as the opposition began to crave a goal which may have sparked a fightback.
Aaron Dolan would land a 45 at the second attempt while Gary Doherty, who continued to impress in open play, added a point from the left wing. Matthew McAloon continued to carry the ball at the Erne Gaels defence and notched two more taking his tally to a half dozen for the evening while Aaron Dolan also registered another.
In the closing five minutes Erne Gaels hit four unanswered points, nothing more than consolation efforts as Belcoo advance to the Quarter Final.
