Sep. 13, 2015
INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL: Irvinestown 1-11 v 1-6 Belcoo
Belcoo would limp out of the Intermediate Championship in Tempo on Sunday evening as Irvinestown booked their place in this years Final and in doing so secured a spot in next years Senior Championship following the 1-11 to 1-6 victory.
Belcoo were well below par throughout and despite having plenty of possession they were quite ponderous and made numerous unforced errors over the course of the hour.
Irvinestown had hit three wides before they eventually opened the scoring through a Ronan Ormsby free kick. Belcoo would level through Jonathan Feeley but this was a close as the O'Rahilly's got to the lead.
Ormsby and Gary Maguire extended Irvinestown’s advantage while James Duffy also found the target to make it 0-4 to 0-1 by the midway stage of the first half.
Brian Cox would fire over two quick scores, the first following a lengthy run from Paul McGrath while patient build up play for the second seen Cox fire over from the 40m line.
A surging Ciaran Flaherty took him through the Irvinestown defence but his shot for goal went wide of the right post. Irvinestown pressed on to kick three late points in the first half to hold a 0-7 to 0-3 interval lead.
The sides traded three points each during the mid-point in the second half, Ciaran Flaherty accounting for all of his sides efforts, two well struck 45's and a good score from play.
Irvinestown had kept the scoreboard ticking with Kevin Duffy, James Duffy and Ronan Campbell while Gary Maguire went close going for goal, his drilled shot whistling narrowly wide.
Brian Cox and James McGrath were battling hard for the O'Rahilly's who really needed a goal at this stage. A high ball into the area was knocked down to Feeley by Paul McGrath in a crowded goalmouth, Feeley's shot was well saved by TJ McMulkin.
The high ball would work in the next attack as Cox's floated ball in was flicked to the net by Paul McGrath to leave just one between the sides at 0-10 to 1-6.
The O'Rahilly's would hit a wide before Irvinestown sweeped forward in numbers working the ball to Stephen Sheridan who confidently stroked the ball into the bottom corner past Patrick Sweeney. Over the final 5minutes Irvinestown would retain possession well, playing down the clock and adding an insurance score as they sealed a deserved victory with five points to spare.
