RESERVE B CHAMPIONSHIP: Maguiresbridge 1-11 v 1-9 Belcoo
It was a case of nearly but not quite as Belcoo Juniors exited the Championship at the Semi Final stage on a 1-11 to 1-9 score line at Lissan this evening. Maguiresbridge found themselves 8points up with 34minutes played before Belcoo rallied and really should have won the contest. Three fine saves from the 'Bridge goalkeeper including a penalty save and a string of wides during a dominant final flurry coupled with a poor opening half ultimately undone the O'Rahilly's.
In the first half Maguiresbridge held the upper hand from an early stage as Stephen Brannigan broke through to set up Matthew Teague and he was fouled for a penalty with just four minutes on the clock. Barry Flanagan drilled high past Patrick Sweeney.
Belcoo would hit two points in the first ten minutes, Aaron Dolan from a placed ball and Dean McDermott from play but it was Maguiresbridge who looked to have the more threatening attack. Five points in seven minutes hoisted them into a comfortable position while Patrick Sweeney denied a second goal with a smart save. Matthew Martin (2), Stephen Reihill, John Duffy and Emmett Rice all on target.
Over the closing stages the sides shared four points, Aaron Dolan with a fine point from wide on the right while Gary Maguire also found the target from that side of the field but it was Maguiresbridge who took a 1-7 to 0-4 lead into the break as Matthew Martin struck two more for his side.
Stephen Brannigan and Sean Corrigan clipped over early points to extend the lead to eight after the restart before Belcoo began to mount a challenge.
For 20minutes the O'Rahilly's didn't let Maguiresbridge back up be field. Gerard Mellor and Seamus Conlon would boss the middle sector as Belcoo began winning first and second phase possession from every kickout.
A long range effort for point from Martin Corrigan dropped onto the crossbar which seen a scramble in sue and Kieran Conlon wheeled away celebrating a goal. Matthew McAloon followed up with a point before the 'Bridge keeper Martin McCann took centre stage.
James Stewart who was excellent in the second period robbed his man off possession and set Belcoo on the attack once more, the ball was worked downfield and a penalty awarded. Aaron Dolan's driven effort was beaten away by McCann and while Belcoo continued to apply pressure they went some 10minutes without a score before Gary Doherty fired over to make it 1-9 to 1-6.
Maguiresbridge responded in a rare foray forward as Barry Flanagan tapped over yet Belcoo remained on top, a powerful run from Seamus Conlon seen him evade several challenges as he got within goal range, again the ‘keeper thwarted him with a fine save.
Matthew McAloon pointed a free with 8 minutes remaining to make it a three point game again but it was time for the goalkeeper to make his third important save, this time denying Niall Cullen. Matthew McAloon and Seamus Conlon would hit points in the closing stages to leave one between the sides however the equaliser proved illusive and with the final attack Maguiresbridge added another for a two point success.
The defeat ends the Season for the Juniors who finished 4th in the league and exited the Championship this evening at the Semi Final stage.
