Three Late Goals See U16's Snatch Draw
Sep. 20, 2015
U16 Division 3 League: Belcoo 6-4 v 5-7 Irvinestown
Belcoo U16 showed great battling qualities to come from 9 points down with 5minutes remaining to snatch a draw from their home game against Irvinestown on Sunday morning. Played in difficult conditions the game ebbed and flowed with Belcoo very wasteful in the first half and Irvinestown dominating much of the second half. Belcoo though would fire in three late goals to salvage a point in what is an extremely tight and competitive division.

Irvinestown were first to register a point before Ciaran Flanagan kicked a good point for the O'Rahilly’s and Michael McGourty sent a crossfield ball into the square from the wing which seen the Irvinestown full back put into his own goals having been pressurised by Shane Doherty. Irvinestown responded with a goal themselves on 8minutes and a point soon followed before Belcoo struck for their second goal, a brilliantly taken effort from 25 yards by Conor McAloon.
Ciaran Flanagan and Conor McAloon clipped over two good scores to leave Belcoo four points to the good but over the closing 10minutes of the half Irvinestown took control and registered the final three points of the half to leave Belcoo holding a narrow one point lead at the interval, Belcoo 2-3 (9) v 1-5 (8) Irvinestown.
Belcoo started the second half by conceding several turnovers and the visitors were to hit two purple patches in the second half to move them into a commanding lead. An early 2-1 sent Irvinestown six clear, Eoin Shiels scored a good long range point for Belcoo before Shane Doherty netted on 45minutes to bring the score 3-6 to 3-4 in Irvinestown’s favour.
The visitors would rattle in another quickfire 2-1 to push nine points clear.
It looked ominous for Belcoo but Ciaran Flanagan turned over the ball on the 45 and made a great run before side-footing past the Irvinestown keeper. Belcoo were applying extreme pressure now as they rallied and in the last minute Dermot Burns came up from half-back to slide the ball to the net before an injury time Conor Mc Aloon strike rescue the game.
There were good performances right through the team with Oran McCann was very solid in goals and James McAloon and Eoin Shiels deserve a mention for the leadership shown in the closing stages of the game to encourage the last ditch effort from the whole team. The referee made comment after the game that it was refreshing to hear how the whole Belcoo team encouraged each other throughout.
