Minors Lose Opener To Strong Maguiresbridge Side
Feb. 29, 2016
MINOR: Section B: Maguiresbridge 5-15 v 3-7 Belcoo
Belcoo Minors kicked off their season with an away defeat to a very strong Maguiresbridge team on Sunday going down 5-15 to 3-7. The young O’Rahilly’s side were always chasing the game following a slow start whereby they took sixteen minutes to register a score. By this juncture Maguiresbridge had 1-6, meaning the visitors faced an uphill battle over the remainder of the tie.
However, when Belcoo settled they made a good fist of it, competing well but poor turnouts at the initial training sessions was evident in the fact that the opposition were much quicker to the ball and the tackle in the first 20 minutes.
Gerard Mc Hugh was Belcoo’s most consistent performer throughout the game and he surged forward from half-back to record a good point to get his side on the scoreboard for the first time.
Maguiresbridge hit back with a score of their own before James McAloon recorded a rare score for Belcoo, the ever improving defender commenting after the game, it was his first score in some four years for the O’Rahilly’s.
A Gary Doherty 45 found it’s way into the net on 22minutes while his brother Shane popped over a neat point to leave the half time score Maguiresbridge 2-9 Belcoo 1-3.
Belcoo opened the scoring in the second half with a well-worked move finished by Conor McAloon and Ciaran Flanagan raised the white flag again before Maguriesbridge took control in a ten minute period which seen them kill the game, adding 2-2 to their tally.
Belcoo would lose Michael McGourty through injury but the half back line remained strong, breaking forward well once more was Gerard Mc Hugh to plunder a find goal before Shane Doherty netted a well-taken goal moments later.
While Maguiresbridge managed to knock on a few points Belcoo continued to press forward, Conor McAloon took a nice point and Ciaran Flanagan was desperately unlucky to rattle the crossbar after a great move involving nice passes from defence to attack. The home team finished the scoring with the last point to leave the score 5-15 to 3-7.
We have a young minor team this year with all but 3 of the players still eligible to play next year and they will have gained good experience by playing one of the stronger teams in the group first. Training will recommence Tuesday evening at 7.30pm
