Juniors Suffer First Loss

Box Score

Apr. 2, 2016

ERNE CUP DIVISION 2: Kinawley 1-12 v 2-7 Belcoo

Belcoo Juniors would suffer a first league defeat of the season as they went down to Kinawley on a 1-12 to 2-7 scoreline. On an extremely wet evening the O'Rahillys would rue a wasteful opening half in front of goal before they received two black cards and only had one sub meaning they would play the last quarter with just 14men.

The visiting Belcoo side had two early wides registered before Kinawley hit two well taken points from their corner forward. Belcoo's first score would be a goal in the sixth minute as Aaron Dolan's ball found Philip Leonard who spilled possession before a soccer style finish hit the net.

Kinawley waltzed straight down the field to bang in a goal in response before the tie settled and Belcoo took a firm grip of things. Gerard Mellor, Barry McGovern and Declan Leonard were controlling the middle sector during a dominate spell however a string of five straight wides meant the visitors failed to capitalise on their good spell. This allowed a much more clinical Kinawley side to increase their lead with two more points to move 1-4 to 1-0 ahead.

Belcoo would find their shooting boots in the final few minutes of the half to go in ahead at the break. Philip Leonard kicked a free after Aidan McGrath was fouled before Leonard netting a second goal.

Gerard Mellor plucked a kickout before working a one-two with James Gillespie, Mellor then found Barry McGovern on the wing and his long ball into the area was gathered by Philip Leonard and dispatched to the net via the inside of the post.

Matthew McAloon had an effective opening half and would land a good point coming to the break as Belcoo went in 2-2 to 1-4 up although they should have been further in front.

Kinawley began the second period very well, three quick point pushed them ahead before Barry McGovern struck a good point for Belcoo. The O'Rahillys would lose centre half forward Matthew McAloon to a black card and Kinawley banged over two more points to push three clear by the 40th minute.

Barry McGovern would again land a good point for his side but they were dealt another blow, Dean McDermott, who had got through a lot of work, picked up a black card and with no subs remaining after losing a player to injury earlier, the visitors were down to 14 for the closing 15minutes.

Kinawley would keep themselves at arms length hit, another point moved them three ahead once more. Belcoo however began to play better football and turnover the hosts time after time despite the numerical disadvantage.

Ian Corrigan and two Philip Leonard frees were sandwiched between two breakaway scores for Kinawley as they contest drew to its conclusion, the home team, 1-12 to 2-7 victors.

Belcoo had plenty of possession over the hour to have taken something from the game. There were good showings from Brendan McPartland in defence while Mellor and McGovern won the midfield duel.
