Seniors Suffer Defeat in Irvinestown
Apr. 17, 2016
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: Irvinestown 3-6 v 1-6 Belcoo
Irvinestown would make it two wins from two as they recorded a 3-6 to 1-6 victory over Belcoo in today's Senior League encounter. The O'Rahilly's never really got going during the hour as they trailed from start to finish.
These sides hadn't meet in a league fixture in 10years and it was the home team who began sharply, Ronan Ormsby landing an early point from play before clipping over a close range free kick. Belcoo were to squander a few opportunities but would register points through Matthew McAloon and Jonathan Feeley to tie matters.
The hosts though were beginning to overrun the O'Rahilly's as they broke forward at pace with several willing runners providing plenty of options for the ball carrier. Ronan Campbell, who was heavily involved in his sides good work, strode forward to point before his side would turnover Belcoo and register a first goal. Ronan Ormsby doing well on the left, his fist across goal was palmed to the net by Tiernan Daly.
Lively wing back Joey Millar strode upfield to point while Belcoo almost netted a goal of their own at the other end. Matthew McAloon fielding a high ball, turning and shooting, the effort struck the crossbar and fell to an Irvinestown defender.
Belcoo's sole score in the final 15minutes of the opening half came from a Paul McGrath free kick but the hosts hit a second goal before the interval to take a 2-4 to 0-3 lead into the break. Joey Millar running 40yards with possession before spilling the ball and soccering it to the net.
The second period continued to be tight but their were several misplaced kick passes in an error ridden period of play. Scores eventually began to flow with Jonathan Feeley hitting two places balls with the hosts also finding the target. Belcoo were to strike their goal on 48minutes when Jonathan Feeley took a quick free kick from close range which nestled into the bottom corner for 2-5 to 1-5.
Irvinestown's response was to immediately register a point. There would then be a prolonged scoreless period as the game moved toward to finish. The final pass on occasion letting down the visitors who were having a good spell of sustained pressure. A sole free from Feeley was the only score during this time and with two minutes to play Irvinestown secured the victory. Kevin McDonnell raced forward from wing back and found Ronan Ormsby with a delightful pass, the attacker gathered and found the bottom corner of the net which signalled the end of the contest at 3-6 to 1-6.
Next weekend sees a double round of games, Belcoo host Ederney on Friday at 7.15pm before travelling to Roslea on Sunday for a 1pm throw in as they go in search of a first league victory of 2016.
