Seniors Lose At Home To Ederney
Apr. 22, 2016
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: Belcoo 1-8 v 1-12 St. Joseph's Ederney
Belcoo would suffer a second straight league defeat as they went down 1-12 to 1-8 at home to Ederney on Friday evening. The O'Rahilly's surrendered an interval lead as the visitors finished strongly to seal a first win of the campaign.
The opening exchanges seen Martin McGrath land the first score after a sweeping move. Belcoo were to squander a few good scoring chances before Jonathan Feeley raised the white flag.
Points were traded over a ten minute period with Philip Leonard, Matthew McAloon and Aaron Dolan registering for the home team while the McCusker brothers Paul (2) and Declan accounted for their scores.
Coming to half time Belcoo worked an opening goal, James McGrath's kick out picked out Paul McGrath who in turn found Ciaran Flaherty, a strong surging run ended with Flaherty planting the ball into the net.
Ederney were to respond with the final score of the half to leave it 1-4 to 0-5 in Belcoo's favour at the break.
Belcoo would waste a lot of possession in the early part of the second half and Ederney capitalised with some clinical finishing to tap over well taken scores to level.
Matthew McAloon looked to have been fouled inside the big square, a free was awarded which Jonathan Feeley tapped over. Belcoo were to create a wonderful goal scoring opportunity as Shain Gallagher won possession a few yards from goal but his shot struck the crossbar.
It proved to be a pivotal few moments as a full length move ended with Declan McCusker being hauled down for a penalty kick at the other end of the field. Chris Snow's powerful spot kick found the net via the underside of the bar and hoisted the visitors into a 1-8 to 1-6 lead.
Ederney pressed on from here as their tails were up, Martin McGrath and Paul McCusker both pointed from the right wing. Belcoo failed to muster a response of note, sporadic points from Dean McDermott and Niall Leonard over the closing quarter were matched by another Martin McGrath score and a late McCusker point put four between the sides at full time.
Belcoo travel to Roslea on Sunday for a 1pm throw in as they look to record a first victory of the campaign.
