Belcoo U14 Girls Enjoy Bawnacre Blitz

Girls football is back in Belcoo as an Under 14 team took part in a well run blitz at the Bawnacre Centre today. The O'Rahilly's Girls recording two wins, a draw and two defeats at the event.
With a couple of weeks training behind them this was the first time these girls have played together and played girls only football. As the day progressed the girls grew in confidence and had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Games were all 9 a side, 10minutes one way contests with three pitches on the go.
Game 1: Belcoo would meet the hosts Irvinestown in the opening game and it would finish level, 1-1 each.
Belcoo made a bright opening with Mikayla Maguire getting on the end of a pass from Arlene Furey to poke the ball into the net. Aine Barrett would knock over a free while Irvinestown pressed hard, Lana Shiels would make a great save, tipping the ball onto the bar. The hosts managed to rattle 1-1 in the final few moments while their were good showings from Niamh McAloon and Sinead Barrett during this tie.

Game 2: Belcoo faced Knockninny Gaels and were to go down by 2-0 to 1-0 in a close encounter. Aoife Keaney would find the target for Belcoo who were unfortunate not to level late on. This was a tough and tight battle throughout with Cara Grey doing well in defence while Ciana McGrath, Aine Barrett and Niamh McAloon worked very hard in the middle sector.

Game 3: Belcoo would register eight scores in the 10minute game as they beat Devenish 3-5 to no score. Ciana McGrath rattled in an early goal with Aoife Keaney following up with a well taken point. Sinead Barrett jinked infield to fire in a second Belcoo goal while Ciana McGrath and Arlene Furey registered good points. There was some good defending by Lana Shiels and Cara Grey with Mikayla Maguire now between the posts. Scarlett O'Connor, Siofra McAloon and Sam Martin all featured while Aine Barrett picked up a knock to rule her out of further games.
Belcoo finished with a late 1-1, Aoife Keaney getting the goal with Arlene Furey registering the final point.
Plenty of craic in between games with friends from other clubs
Game 4: Belcoo went straight back out and despite a good showing, they slipped to a 1-3 to 1-1 defeat to Erne Gaels. Arlene Furey had registered an early goal with Sinead Barrett and Sam Martin impressing. Erne Gaels would hit two points before Ciana McGrath clipped over a fine effort. Erne Gaels would finish well despite some solid defending from Niamh McAloon to add a goal and point for the win.

Game 5: Belcoo would finish the event with a great win again St. Pats on a 4-2 to 1-2 scoreline. An Aoife Keaney goal and Ciana McGrath point had given Belcoo a good start however St. Pats rallied to hit 1-2. Belcoo though were working extremely hard and tightened up defensively with Cara Grey, Niamh McAloon and Lana Shiels winning their battles.
Going forward Belcoo finished well, hitting three quick fire goals as they penned back St. Pats. Niamh McAloon whacked in a good goal while Aoife Keaney followed up with a goal from a free. Sam Martin was next to find the net with a good strike and the victory was sealed with a late Niamh McAloon point as Rachel Nolan and Eve Barrett contributed well late in this tie.
All in all it was an encouraging and enjoyable first outing for the girls. Training continues on Wednesday 27th from 7pm to 8.15pm.
