Apr. 29, 2016
SENIORS: Devenish 0-14 v 1-16 Belcoo
Belcoo came through a titanic tussle with neighbours Devenish at the Garrison venue on Friday evening to record a first league win of the season on a 1-16 to 0-14 scoreline.
The O'Rahilly's had trailed throughout the contest but Paul McGrath would weave his way through the home defence before slotting the ball into the net and sending the sky blues into a 1-12 to 0-13 lead with 10minutes to play. Some superb defending and well taken scores in the closing stages seen Belcoo to the victory in what was a very committed and hard working hour from the visitors.
In the opening half which seen some free flowing football, the two teams kicked 19points between them, the hosts shading the contest 0-10 to 0-9 at the interval.
Barry McGovern's breaks free from Jason Love in the first half
Chris O'Brien was on target early from two placed balls but Ciaran Flaherty and Philip Leonard fired over good efforts from the right wing to tie matters. It was end to end stuff with Jarleth O'Brien and Barry Mulrone registering for the hosts as well as Chris O'Brien once more however Belcoo remained in touch having driven forward and drawn free kicks when Matthew McAloon and Paul McGrath were brought down, Philip Leonard duly fired over the two frees to bring his side within a point.
Devenish remained on top and added more scores via Mulrone and O'Brien, Belcoo were in a determined mood and continued to peg them back, Paul McGrath pointing from a free on the left while Philip Leonard arrowed over a fine score and Shain Gallagher got on the end of a flowing move to clip over a point.
Niall Leonard gets to grips with Barry Mulrone during the opening half
Coming to half time Barry Mulrone added two free kicks from distance however Belcoo had the final say with Matthew McAloon pointing from an acute angle and Ciaran Flaherty's powerful surging run ended with him splitting the posts.
Belcoo were to get level early in the second half when Dean McDermott and Christopher Leonard combined to find Shain Gallagher who pointed for 0-10 a piece. The contest continued to ebb and flow, defences took over for a period, the Leonard twins, Ryan McGovern and Declan Leonard at full back coming out with several balls while Barry McGovern excelled throughout the hour in the wing back position.
It was Devenish who hit the front again with two placed balls, Mulrone and O'Brien doing the necessary but again Belcoo came battling back, Matthew McAloon fired over two excellent scores after some patient build up play, one from each side of the field, the second a super effort under pressure on the right wing.
Christopher Leonard secures possession with a well taken catch
Devenish again managed to edge in front for a 0-13 to 0-12 lead before Belcoo struck the games only goal, Paul McGrath gathering possession on the 45 and racing through the defence to finish past Thomas Treacy.
The goal spurred on the visitors for a big finish, another slick back to front move seen Ciaran Flaherty arrow over from just inside the 45 before Paul McGrath landed a free from 50metres with Philip Leonard adding a close range free and Aaron Dolan crowning another impressive move with a wonderfully struck point from the right.
Devenish could only muster a point in response to the fast finishing O'Rahilly's who secured a first league win and move above tonight's opponents.
