Forwards Run Riot As Junior Lose To The Gaels
Apr. 30, 2016
ERNE CUP DIVISION 2: Enniskillen 4-13 v 2-17 Belcoo
The wide open spaces of a 13 a side game in Brewster Park were evident this evening as Belcoo and Enniskillen Juniors played out game with 36 scores in the hour, the hosts winning by two points 4-13 to 2-17.
Belcoo held the upper hand during the first period however a three goal blast by the Gaels early in the second half paved the way to victory as they took a lead they never relinquished.
The opening score of the contest came from an unlikely source, Shane McAloon, a defender by trade, playing with a tight hamstring at corner forward tonight fired over a fine point. A long ball by Aaron Dolan bounced over the bar for a second before Belcoo hit the first goal. Niall Cullen's long pass into Shane McAloon was gathered and shifted to Gary Maguire who hit the net.
The Gaels got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute via Mark Hoy but Matthew McAloon hit back after good work from Cullen and Dolan.
Martin Corrigan would make a great block before Belcoo had a good opening for a second goal, Aaron Dolan's strong run led to a chance for Shane McAloon who fired wide. Belcoo would go ten minutes without a score as Enniskillen edged their way back into the tie with points from Martin Markey and Sean McAleer for 1-3 to 0-3 on 20minutes.
The closing ten minutes of the half seen a flurry of scores. Brendan McPartland made a great block in front of the Belcoo goals and the visitors broke downfield at pace, Aaron Dolan running through to point. Neil McDermott responded for the Gaels but Belcoo found the net for the second time and again Gary Maguire was the marksman after Dean McDermott had carried the ball 50yards and slipped in Shane McAloon who again provided the final pass for Maguire to tuck to the net. 2-4 to 0-4.
The Gaels would hit a quick 1-2 with Markey netting and the impressive wing forward Gavin McGinn hitting the points but Belcoo hit a trio of late points themselves. Aaron Dolan (2) and Dean McDermott. Half time: Enniskillen Gaels 1-6 v 2-7 Belcoo.
While Belcoo opened the second half with points from Matthew McAloon and Aaron Dolan the Gaels went into overdrive, running in 3-4 in a ten minute spell as a porous Belcoo rearguard failed to release the pressure. The third of these goals a penalty after Daire Keaney had hauled down an attacker.
Now trailing 4-10 to 2-9 Belcoo returned to the Hospital Road end and began to raise the white flag again. Aaron Dolan, Shane McAloon (2) and Matthew McAloon pulled it back to a three point deficit.
The Gaels were fit to keep the visitors at arms length over the final 10minutes as the sides were to trade points. Aaron Dolan kicking three late scores while Gary Maguire clipped over a free however three Gavin McGinn points helped his side to a 4-13 to 2-17 success.
