May. 19, 2016
U14 Girls Challenge: Belcoo 0-5 v 4-13 Shannon Gaels
Belcoo U14 Girls had another good challenge game tonight as they hosted an impressive Shannon Gaels outfit. It was the side from across the border who recorded the victory in what was a good battle between the two sides.
Belcoo are in the early stages of their project and this fixture will help them going forward. There was some good showings from the O'Rahilly's who done well in the early stages.
Some stout defending from Lana Shiels and Cara Gray keeping the visitors at bay with Mikayla Maguire clearing her lines well between the posts. Shannon Gaels possessed some sharp forwards and they would open the scoring on 7minutes with a close range goal before clipping over two points by the midway stage.

Belcoo were working very hard to pressure all shots with Niamh McAloon and Aoife Keaney turning over some good balls while Arlene Furey timing some great tackles to knock the ball away from Shannon Gaels forwards.
The O'Rahilly's had chances of their own to score with Furey and Ciana McGrath registering wides before Aine Barrett scored a fine point in the 16th minute. Sinead Barrett was very lively in the attack for the home side, providing a constant outlet with Sam Martin showing well inside.
Belcoo could have added to their tally, the final pass or effort for a score well blocked by a strong Blacklion defence. Crona Higgins narrowly fired wide going for goal with Ciana McGrath and Aine Barrett seeing goalbound efforts thwarted. By the interval Shannon Gaels had hit a flurry of late scores to hold a good lead at the break, 3-6 to 0-1.

In the second period Belcoo begun well, some good defending from substitutes Siofra McAloon and Riona Keaney alongside Lana Shiels seen the hosts keep Shannon Gaels scoreless for 12minutes.
In that time Belcoo had hit two nice points, Aoife Keaney working the ball forward to Niamh McAloon who drove over an excellent point from distance. Crona Higgins would land a second following some fine work by the Barrett sisters Sinead and Aine.
Shannon Gaels would return to the other end and began to get the scoreboard moving again with three quick points however Belcoo levelled up the second half score when Crona Higgins cut in from the right wing and cleverly fisted a point.

Shannon Gaels would produce a strong finish over the closing ten minutes hitting 1-4 while the O'Rahilly's sole response a well struck score from Arlene Furey. Again, the O’Rahilly’s will have learned alot from this hour, the work rate once more couldn’t be questioned.
Belcoo's next outing is a league opener in Belleek on Monday evening, bus leaving Cottage Meadow at 5.50pm. We wish Shannon Gaels all the best in their upcoming Championship game.
