Fast Finishing Belcoo Come Up A Bit Short
May. 24, 2016
U14 Girls Section B: Erne Gaels 6-3 v 4-7 Belcoo
What a super game in Belleek this was as our Under 14 Girls played their first competitive match. The O'Rahilly's made a fantastic comeback in what was a rousing second half performance but time was against them as Erne Gaels held on to win by two points on a 6-3 to 4-7 scoreline.
Erne Gaels had begun brightly with a quick goal and point from Aoife McCann and Eimear McMahon however Belcoo settled into their stride and created a number of good openings at the other end, Aoife Keaney pointing after a good run.

It was hard work in the wide open spaces of the big field and having withstood a good period of pressure and kept Belcoo scoreless in that spell, Erne Gaels countered downfield to hit four goals in as many minutes, three of these long range efforts for points which dipped under the bar in the big goals.
Eimear McMahon would add a point for the hosts but Belcoo finished the half on top. Aoife Keaney and Sinead Barrett doing well on the left to setup a score for Aine Barrett while Scarlett O'Connor drove in from the right and laid on a pass for Ciana McGrath to thump over from distance. Half time 5-2 (17) to 0-3 (3).

Belcoo reappeared in the second half a different team. More confidence and belief in themselves and they dominated the full half coming up just short at the finish in what was a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting contest.
There was some great defending from Cara Gray and Lana Sheils in the full back line. Mikayla Maguire was to make three mighty saves with Siofra McAloon, Rachel Nolan and Rhianne McGuinness battling hard.
Belcoo would start fast with Ciana McGrath hitting a quick 1-1 to cut the deficit to 10points. Erne Gaels would hit back with a goal despite Maguire making a great save, the rebound was poked in from close range.
From here to the finish though it was all Belcoo as they blocked, hassled and turned over their opponents time after time. Niamh McAloon, Arlene Furey and Sinead Barrett all timing challenges really well to win back ball, Riona Keaney cut out a few forward passes while Aine Barrett and Sam Martin continued to show well in the forward line.
Ciana McGrath carries the ball at the Erne Gaels defence
Belcoo would pin back the hosts and Ciana McGrath got on the end of two passes to find the bottom left corner to leave it 6-2 to 3-4 with ten minutes to play.
Aoife Keaney popped over a neat point but Erne Gaels responded in kind. There was seven separating the side with five minutes to play and Belcoo were now in full flight, looking fitter and finishing strongly as they hunted in packs and won back ball all over the field. Lana Shiels and Niamh McAloon starting moves in defence with Arlene Furey and Sinead Barrett providing the link going forward.
Ciana McGrath would clip over a free kick before Eve Barrett, one of the youngest on the field, gathered possession inside the 20m line and rattled over a fine point.
Belleek were continuing to struggle to get out of their half and Belcoo, who were clinical throughout the second half, would register three late wides as the game edged to its conclusion.
The visitors did rattle the net again, Ciana McGrath bagging her fourth goal of the contest to leave just two between the sides. Unfortunately for Belcoo, time was almost up and just a few seconds remained as Erne Gaels held on to record a two point victory.
This was a encouraging opening for the very young Belcoo side who should now have a bit more belief in themselves following a superb effort throughout the game. Despite a second half which seen them out score the hosts 4-4 to 1-1 they came up a bit short in the end. Pre game targets were met however on a positive night for the O'Rahilly's girls. Training continues on Thursday from 7pm to 8.15pm.
