U14 Girls Draw With Derrygonnelly
May. 30, 2016
U14 Girls: Section B: Belcoo 3-4 v 2-7 Derrygonnelly
Belcoo and Derrygonnelly U14 Girls would play out a draw in really humid conditions at MacNean Park on Monday evening, a late Ciana McGrath point giving the home side a share of the spoils on a 3-4 to 2-7 scoreline.
In truth the game could have gone either way, Derrygonnelly bossed the opening half while Belcoo were in charge throughout the second period. The young O’Rahilly’s ruing a number good openings to add to their tally when they took the lead midway through second half.
Sinead Barrett burst forward for Belcoo in the opening half
Derrygonnelly had the ball in the net inside three minutes with a strong run and finish from Megan Maguire. Belcoo though responded when Aoife Keaney carried the ball forward before offloading to Aine Barrett to net a leveller.
Some good defending from Lana Shiels and a well timed block from Cara Grey kept Derrygonnelly at bay until the 11th minute when Megan Maguire clipped over two quick points while Caoimhe Rainey slotted over another for the visitors.
Belcoo however responded with a second goal, Niamh McAloon forced an overcarry in defence before shifting through the hands of Sinead Barrett, Scarlett O’Connor and Aine Barrett who put Sam Martin in to level the game at 2-0 to 1-3 with a well worked goal.
In the closing five minutes of the first period Derrygonnelly added three more points. Aoibhinn Jones, Sarah-Jayne Jones and a Megan Maguire free kick left them ahead 1-6 to 2-0 at the interval.
Belcoo had never really got going in the opening half but emerged after the break like they did in Belleek the week before, much brighter and hungrier. Ciana McGrath levelled matters with a quick goal after Aine Barrett had done well.
Aine Barrett wins possession in the lead up to Belcoo goal at the start of the second half
Arlene Furey strode forward to give Belcoo the lead with a well taken point before Belcoo seen the woodwork deny them twice. The excellent Sinead Barrett drove infield but seen the post deny her a point while moments later Barrett was upended in the penalty area. Ciana McGrath’s penalty kick hit the inside of the post, the Harps goalkeeper Aoife Campbell thwarted the rebound and Derrygonnelly had survived.
Belcoo though were well on top at this juncture and Sinead Barrett would race in from the left side to land a fine point before Aine Barrett did likewise on that side to push Belcoo three clear 3-3 to 1-6.
Derrygonnelly hadn’t registered a score in 12minutes of the second half, Mikayla Maguire doing well to make a great save while Cara Grey and Lana Shiels continued to impress in the full back line. Niamh McAloon had nullified Sarah-Jayne Jones’ influence on proceedings with Siofra McAloon coming out with an important interception setting the O’Rahilly’s on their way forward again.
Aoife Keaney had carried the game to the visitors throughout with long solo drives while Eve Barrett was in the thick of the action having came on at the interval.
It was the Harps who registered the next score from Aoibhinn Jones before Sarah Jayne Jones thumped into the net from close range with four minutes to play putting her side one point ahead, 2-7 to 3-3.
Belcoo though were in determined mood and worked the ball downfield in added time to win a free, again Sinead Barrett was halted. Ciana McGrath confidently struck from outside the 21m line and tied the game.
The O’Rahilly’s had one final attempt to snatch the win having gained possession but the effort at goal dropped short and the game finished a draw, 3-4 to 2-7.
It was a good point to get in the end for Belcoo, who are making steady steps forward having only formed this season a few weeks ago. Training continues on Thursday evening from 7pm to 8.15pm. Next League game is at Home to Kinawley next Monday night at 7pm.
