Rousing Second Half Gives Seniors Victory

Box Score

Jul. 8, 2016

Senior League: Belcoo 1-17 v 2-9 Irvinestown

A rousing second half display from a determined Belcoo seen them record a 1-17 to 2-9 win over Irvinestown and in doing so they picked up a third straight league victory.

There was just one between them at the interval but a blistering opening to the second period seen the O'Rahilly's strike seven unanswered points in ten minutes to hoist themselves into the lead.

They were defensively superb, turning over possession regularly and driving forward at pace as Irvinestown couldn't mount a response during that spell. Aaron Dolan stroked three in a row with James Stewart and Matthew McAloon finishing good moves before Gavin Leonard was hauled down after a lung bursting run for Dolan to tap over from close range.

Shain Gallagher added the seventh after Niall Leonard and Paul McGrath had carried the ball forward at pace for Gallagher to slot over a neat score to move Belcoo 0-15 to 1-6 ahead.

Midfielder Ronan Campbell did raise the white flag for the first time midway through the half with Ronan Ormsby tapping over a free kick to reduce the deficit to four however Belcoo struck their only goal to seize the initiative once more.

Paul McGrath done extremely well to keep the ball in play on the dugout side before being fouled. A quickly taken free by McGrath released Christopher Leonard who in turn found Matthew McAloon who cut infield before rifling a driven shot to the roof of the net. The seven point lead was shortlived however as Irvinestown banged in a second goal. A long ball into the square was gathered and netted by substitute Francis Ward. Belcoo though would hit two more points before the finish, Jonathan Feeley doing well on both occasions to create space and fire over the black spot to seal the victory.

During a high octane first period their was some great battles, raps taken and given with no questions asked as referee Kevin Donnelly let proceedings flow.

It was pretty much nip and tuck on the scoreboard, Shain Gallagher landing the opener from the right side with Ronan Ormsby responding before centre back Niall Leonard joined the attack following some patient build up play to slot over from distance.

Belcoo had been moving the ball well from defence to attack while Barry McGovern and Christopher Leonard were on top in the middle section. Ian Corrigan was next to point having gathered possession well while Matthew McAloon knocked over a free after a foul on Paul McGrath.

Irvinestown would hit their first goal at this juncture, the strike taking a wicked deflection off Declan Leonard giving James McGrath no chance in goals. Ormsby added a free with Gary Maguire striking a placed ball from 50metres for the visitors also.

Belcoo though responded well and finished the half strongly, Christopher Leonard this time finding the target after another well thought out move before Matthew McAloon chipping in with two more frees for the hosts.
