U14 Girls Win Opener After Late Late Goal
Jul. 11, 2016
U14 Girls: Division 3: Belcoo 3-5 v 3-3 Ederney
Belcoo U14s got their Divisional games off to a winning start on Monday evening as they recorded a 3-5 to 3-3 win over Ederney. The O'Rahilly's held the upper hand throughout but a poor spell midway through the second half seen Ederney come from seven points down to lead by one with just a few minutes remaining.
The Belcoo girls however are a resilient bunch and in the dying seconds an excellent block by Ciana McGrath in defence sparked an O'Rahilly's breakaway. Arlene Furey took up possession and drove upfield, her ball into the forward line was kept in by Riona Keaney who in turn fed Scarlett O'Connor. The Ederney goalkeeper made a fine save but O'Connor gathered the rebound and was fouled for a penalty kick. Aoife Keaney confidently dispatched the kick low into the corner to give Belcoo a two point win.

The O'Rahillys were excellent in the first period had held a 2-3 to 1-1 interval lead having played some of their best football of the season. They had begun well with a second minute score from Aine Barrett after Arlene Furey, Sinead Barrett and Ciana McGrath were all involved in a slick forward move.
The hosts were doing brilliantly well in defence, Rachel Nolan with an important hand in to cut out Ederney passes on a number of occasions while Sam Martin and Cara Gray were forming a potent full back line. Siofra McAloon grew into the tie after a shaky opening to have a fine half keeping her lively opposite number from gaining possession.
Mikayla Maguire's kickouts were excellent throughout, the defence all wanted the ball and good runs were being made to secure primary possession. Sam Martin, Arlene Furey and Aoife Keaney the go to players from the restarts.
Sinead Barrett timed her tackle to perfection to knock the ball away from the Ederney player mid-kick
Belcoo were to net their first goal on 11 minutes, Aoife Keaney's free kick picking out Arlene Furey who gathered and thumped the ball into the net from 10yards.
Belcoo quickly added a second, the excellent Arlene Furey once more carrying the game to Ederney before a neat through ball sent Ciana McGrath through on goal and she fired low past the 'keeper.
Riona Keaney followed up with a great point after good work by Scarlett O'Connor and Belcoo were looking good coming to the interval.
Ederney had managed just one point to this juncture from Katie Brosnan before Katie Teague netted as the Belcoo defence switched off with Ederney taking a quick free to score their opening goal.

Mikayla Maguire had done well to come from her goals to gather and clear her lines with Aoife Keaney and Sinead Barrett providing outlets upfield. On the stroke of half time the Barrett sisters Sinead and Aine worked the ball well before Ciana McGrath strode forward to land a fine point giving Belcoo a five point advantage at the break 2-3 to 1-1.
Belcoo were to begin the half well again and quickly added two points. Ciana McGrath winning a kickout before slipping Sinead Barrett in to point and with the next kickout, Barrett won possession and was fouled for McGrath to point from distance.
Belcoo though wouldn't score again for 16minute. Ederney went on to have a dominate 10minute spell were they hit 2-2. The goals coming within a minute of one another as Belcoo struggle to gain possession and get up the field.

Eve Barrett was working tirelessly having been introduced to the defence but Ederney seemed to have spare players all over the place as Belcoo again were caught ball watching as the visitors slipped in behind to take their scores.
Having lead and controlled the majority of the tie, the game looked to have slipped away but with a minute to play the O'Rahilly's countered upfield and gained their penalty which Aoife Keaney slotted to the net for the two point success.
It was a win the Belcoo Girls deserved however they made hard work of it in the end. Belcoo now travel to Tempo on Wednesday evening for a 7pm throw in. Bus leaving cottage meadow car park at 5.50pm.
