Harps On Top As Seniors Struggle Again
Aug. 14, 2016
SENIORS: Derrygonnelly 2-17 v 0-11 Belcoo
Same story, different day as Belcoo suffered a sixth defeat in a row and it was another heavy one at that. With one game to play, Belcoo must avoid defeat to Maguiresbridge to remain outside the bottom two. New rules mean the bottom two must win both playoff games to survive, 7th & 8th need one win from two playoff games to stay up. It's a bleak picture as we enter the final league fixture with the Championship in the offing also, just 16 players togged out for this contest.
The O'Rahilly's hit the opening point after patient play, Barry McGovern arrowing over. This was as good as it got, by the interval it was 1-9 to 0-4. Paul McGrath kicking three frees for Belcoo while Derrygonnelly added scores at a regular rate. Belcoo's own basic errors and good turnovers from Derrygonnelly seen the Harps capitalise and counter at great pace with runners and options aplenty.
Leigh Jones, Conal Jones, Ryan Jones and Stephen McGullion all hit points with Ryan Jones rattling the goal midway through the half.
In the second half Neil Gallagher got forward from wing back to land some neat points from distance with Conal Jones, Leigh Jones and Peter Gallagher all pushing the hosts into a commanding lead before Stephen McGullion netted his sides second goal.
Belcoo never threatened to stage a fightback and like last weeks second period, they were fit to tag on points when the outcome was long since known. Jonathan Feeley was on target from play and frees while Ciaran Flaherty knocked over a sideline ball along with an effort from play and Ian Corrigan also registered a point.
Team. James McGrath, Ryan Leonard, Declan Leonard, Gavin Leonard, Niall Cullen, Niall Leonard, Ryan McGovern, Christopher Leonard, Barry McGovern (0-1), Brendan McPartland, Paul McGrath (0-3), Ciaran Flaherty (0-2), Aidan Leonard, Jonathan Feeley (0-4), Ian Corrigan (0-1). Subs Martin Corrigan.
