Juniors Get Point In Roslea
May. 1, 2010
This was a hard hitting but entertaining encounter in Roslea on Saturday evening as both sides had to work hard to get the scores they did. It took a free kick from Ryan McCormick five minutes into stoppage time to secure a point for the home side as the game finished Roslea 1-9 Belcoo 2-6.
Roslea opening the scoring from a McCormick point from play before a Aaron Mulligan free put the home side two points up. Belcoo's opening score came 13minutes into the half but it was well worth the wait. Ian Corrigan won a kick out before finding Nevan Higgins who slipped the ball into the path of Gavin Leonard and the twin fired over from 30yards.
Another slick Belcoo move involving Ian Corrigan and Stephen Nolan ended with centre half back Eoin leonard scoring from long range. From the resulting kick out Stephen Nolan collected the break ball and drove forward before clipping the ball over on his left foot. Shain Gallagher then pointed from distance meaning the whole Belcoo wing half back line had now registered scores.
Two late frees from McCormick and Mulligan ensured the sides went in at the break level at 0-4 each.
At half time Roslea introduced senior player Ruairi McGuiness who was to score 1-1 in the opening 5minutes of the second period while McCormick also registered again. Two other senior players Liam Lynch and Conor Quigley were also introduced. Unfortunately Belcoo were not in the mood to lie down and they showed real grit and determination to get themselves back into the game.
Ian Corrigan scored a point to reduce the deficit to four points, then Patrick Burns won possession on the 40 and went straight through on goal and found the net. The next score was to be a second Belcoo goal, Gavin Leonard's wayward shot was collected by Aidan McGrath who fisted the ball across the square for Gavin Leonard to volley into the net.
An off the ball incident resulted in Belcoo's influential midfielder Patrick Burns and the Roslea full forward Aaron Mulligan both receiving red cards. Then a Gary Maguire free put Belcoo 2-6 to 1-6 ahead with 10minutes remaining. Aidan Leonard in the Belcoo goals made an excellent save as Roslea started to constantly attack the Belcoo goals.
In these last 10 minutes Belcoo hardly got out of their own half but they defended very well and it took a McGuinness 45 and a long range point from James Boyle to reduce the deficit to one. Roslea did eventually get the equaliser deep into stoppage time from a 21yard free kick from McCormick.
This result means Belcoo have 2 wins and 2 draws from their 4 fixtures to date. This weekend they are at home to Derrylin on Saturday evening, throw in is at 6.30pm.
