Seniors Retain Championship Status
Sep. 10, 2016
Intermediate Championship Relegation Playoff: Belcoo 0-14 v 1-9 Enniskillen Gaels
Belcoo Seniors retained their Championship status with a 0-14 to 1-9 win over a dogged Enniskillen Gaels side in Derrygonnelly on Saturday evening.
This was a tight and close encounter throughout where scores proved hard to find for long periods. Paul McGrath opened the scoring from a close range free but it was the Division 2 side who were to carve out a good goal chance, Patrick Sweeney stood big to deny the attacker but a trio of points soon followed for the Gaels.
Ciaran Flaherty would square up his opposite number, power past and add a good point for the O'Rahilly's while Philip Leonard stroked a neat 45 to tie matters.
The goal the Gaels had threatened 10minutes early was now registered with a forward flicking to the net from close to goal however Belcoo were to response well as they led by a point by the interval.
Paul McGrath knocked over a free from the left sideline before Aaron Dolan fired over two well taken points from play with Declan Leonard getting forward to slot over from distance as Belcoo rattled four in a row to lead.
The Gaels hit back via Brian McAleer to level but on the stroke of half time Paul McGrath pointed from play to see his side lead 0-8 to 1-4 at the break.
Belcoo were quick out of the block after the restart and hit three points in five minutes. The first two from Aaron Dolan and Niall McGovern could well have been goals while Philip Leonard added the third for a four point advantage.
Back came a resilient Enniskillen side, driven on by county midfielder Richard O'Callaghan. Belcoo were crowding out the Gaels attack but were penalised frequently for what looked like very soft frees. Brian McAleer pointed three of theses with Niall McGovern clipped over at the other end in the mean time for a 0-12 to 1-7 score with ten minutes to play.
The Gaels couldn't draw level, they were to hit two points either side of a fantastic Christopher Leonard effort from wide on the right and the game sat at 0-13 to 1-9 for a good six minutes before Paul McGrath hit a long range free with a minute remaining to give Belcoo breathing space.
Enniskillen made a late burst for a game winning goal, Ryan McGovern, Niall Leonard and James Stewart all making blocks as the O'Rahilly's stood firm at the death to seal the win.
