John Maguire R.I.P
Nov. 23, 2016
We were all saddened to hear the death of John Maguire recently.
John was one of the greatest players to play Belcoo O’Rahillys. He played for the club in the 1953 Fermanagh Junior League final.
In the mid 1950s John had to move to Belfast due to work. He did continue to travel home for club games for a while but eventually due to travel he transferred from his beloved Belcoo Club. As a member of the famous St John’s team he won five Antrim County Championships and also helped them win the then unofficial Ulster Club title.
John was also a star on the Fermanagh team. He first played with the minors in 1951, 52 and 53 and eventually graduated to the senior team. He won an Ulster and all-Ireland Junior medals in 1959. In fact John was the first Fermanagh player to score in Croke Park in the Final against Kerry with a superb point in the first minute of the memorable victory.
In 1960 he was given the opportunity to transfer to Down and play county football for them. He declined the offer due to his loyalty to Fermanagh and thus missed out on all-Ireland senior glory with them. John however always said he never regretted it and loved playing with Fermanagh.
John was a real gentleman on the pitch, he believed in playing the game and despite being on the receiving end of abuse he never retaliated.
John always kept in touch with Belcoo results and gave a great interview with Liam Magee in 2005 which thankfully was captured on DVD.
May he rest in peace.
Piece penned by Liam Magee.
