Seniors Draw Again, This Time In Ederney
Apr. 15, 2017
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: Ederney 1-8 v 1-8 Belcoo
Belcoo Seniors returned from Ederney with a point after a second consecutive draw in the league this season. Today it was 1-8 each after a dogged and tough hour, nothing separated the two teams. Paul McGrath's 50m free with three minutes to play proved the final score of an intriguing contest.
It was a tight game throughout with plenty of strong tackles forcing possession to be coughed up at both ends of the field. Scores from open play proved hard to come by but by half time Belcoo were two points clear.
Belcoo were leading 0-3 to 0-2 points to two by the midway stage of the first half, the visitor’s points coming from Ian Corrigan after some patient play, a Jonathan Feeley free kick and a Feeley score from play after he fielded a high ball into the square while Ederney had registered from play before Chris Snow arrowed over a 45.
The 17th minute was where things livened up. The 60seconds here swinging the game firmly in Belcoo’s favour. Ederney were to win a penalty after Niall Leonard halted an attacker in full flight for which he was yellow carded. Chris Snow's kick was magnificently saved by James McGrath low to his left and from the rebound Belcoo gathered possession and broke the length of the field, Eoin Shiels on his first start for the Seniors, raced past his man down the right wing and having drove in towards goal, he slipped the ball to Jonathan Feeley who sidestepped the defender to slot into the net.
What followed was a period of little scoring chances, the two sides now getting to grips with one another and thwarting promising attacks. It was an Ederney turnover on the left wing in the 28th minute that seen them drive downfield to rattle their goal coming to half time. Marty McGrath on the end of the move to fire into the roof of the net from close range.
Belcoo responded with a point from Aaron Dolan before the interval to see them hold a 1-4 to 1-2 lead at the break.
Ederney bossed the first ten minutes of the second period to move two clear themselves, four points in a row were recorded, Paul McCusker and Chris Snow accounting for deadballs with one of the twins also on target.
Belcoo though shuffled the deck and got themselves back into the game, Barry McGovern had an immediate affect claiming a mark from a kickout. A slick move between Paul McGrath, Gavin Leonard, Eoin Shiels and Aaron Dolan seen the latter register Belcoo first score of the half on 42minutes.
Jonathan Feeley would slot over a free on the right to tie matters but Ederney continued to keep themselves ahead as they notched another from a Paul McCusker free.
With the game edging to its conclusion the Belcoo defence did well to pressure a few shots and force some overcarries preventing the hosts getting two clear. Philip Leonard was introduced and he landed a fine point from the ground out wide on the right for a draw game again.
Ederney though won the kickout, worked the ball upfield and were awarded a free. Snow slotted over and with 57minutes on the clock, Paul McGrath's long range free levelled proceeding for what proved to be the final time. Both teams had attacks to conjure a point to win the game but as was the case all night, time and space for efforts from open play were rarely given and the outcome was to be a draw.
It’s been a positive start for Ederney with a win over Devenish and a draw here while Belcoo have opening the season with back to back draws. Up next for the O’Rahilly’s is a home game with Roslea next Sunday at 1pm.
