Seniors Beat Ederney 1-14 to 1-9
May. 9, 2010
The Seniors travelled to Ederney on Sunday and returned winners on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-9. This win means Belcoo have extended their winning start to 4 games but Newtown have kept the pressure on with a victory against Erne Gaels to leave just one point between the two sides.
Belcoo and Ederney traded the first six points in the opening 8minutes with the Belcoo scores coming from Brian Cox, a Ciarán Flaherty 45 and a John Carrigan free kick. Peter Gormley and Paul McCusker were among the St. Joseph's scorers. Shane McCabe pointed from an acute angle his left foot before Flaherty registered another while Ronan Ferguson pointed a free to put Belcoo into a 0-6 to 0-4 lead.
St. Joseph's were awarded a penalty after 15minutes which Paul McCusker duly dispatched into the bottom corner past Aidan Leonard to give Ederney the lead but it was to be their last score of the half. Belcoo's response was immediate, Ryan Dolan got forward and fisted the ball into the path of Brian Cox who fisted the ball to the net. Closing scores from John Carrigan, Shane McCabe, Kieran Leonard and Ronan Ferguson gave Belcoo a 1-10 to 1-4 lead at the break.
The second half was quite scrappy as both sides struggled to find scores, Belcoo only registered 4 points in this half, a Stephen Maguire free was the only score in the first 20minutes. St. Joseph's introduced Martin McGrath at half time and he kicked a long range point during a sustained period of pressure from the home side. This 10minute spell should have yielded more points but some wayward shooting by the home side meant Belcoo's lead was never under threat.
St. Joseph's trailed 1-11 to 1-8 as the game entered the last 10 minutes but Kieran Leonard fired over an excellent point for Belcoo. Ciarán Flaherty stroked another 45 before he scored a good point from play to secure a 1-14 to 1-9 win for the visitors.
Next Sunday Belcoo are Home to Newtown. Throw in is at 3.30pm.
