Seniors Remain Winless Following Defeat In Kinawley
Apr. 30, 2017
The Seniors remain without a win from their four league games as they suffered another defeat on Sunday afternoon in Kinawley. The home side recording a 5-9 to 3-6 victory at the windswept venue. The O’Rahilly’s had the wind advantage in the first period but found themselves 3-3 to 1-4 down at the interval.
Kinawley were much slicker, hungrier and simply waltzed through Belcoo for their three goals, feeding the overlapping runner at all times. Gabriel McHugh registered the first and third with Conor Murphy slotting in the goal between McHugh’s two strikes.
Belcoo offered very little despite having the elements in their favour, there was no cohesion in their play and sporadic points were kicked by Ian Corrigan, Aaron Dolan and Paul McGrath from distance. A fortuitous goal from Philip Leonard, his long range effort for point, dipping under the crossbar and a late Aaron Dolan point had seen Belcoo get to within five at the break.
Belcoo would get back within two points early in the second half when a Paul McGrath ball from the right was fisted to the net by Niall McGovern. It was as close as the O’Rahilly’s got, Kinawley broke downfield immediately and a completely unmarked Paul Doonan was sent through and found the net for his sides fourth goal.
Kinawley went on to hit six second half points, Sean Doherty with a few frees and one from play. The result was never in doubt. Philip Leonard and Ryan Leonard knocked over points from Belcoo while a quickly taken Ian Corrigan free found the top corner late in the game.
Kinawley ended the match with a fifth goal from the final attack. Substitute Daire O’Cathain was free to gather and finish from close range. It was a tough day at the office for the O’Rahilly’s who were best served by Christopher Leonard and Martin Corrigan.
Up next is defending league & championship winners Derrygonnelly who have won all four games to date. Throw in is 7.30pm in Belcoo this coming Friday evening.
Team: James McGrath, Martin Corrigan, Niall McGovern (1-0), Ryan McGovern, Ryan Leonard (0-1), Niall Leonard, Dean McDermott, Paul McGrath (0-1), Christopher Leonard, Eoin Shiels, Ian Corrigan (1-1), Barry McGovern, Aaron Dolan (0-2), James Gillespie, Stephen Nolan. Subs: Philip Leonard (1-1), Gerard Mellor.
