Derrygonnelly Make It Five Wins From Five
May. 5, 2017
SENIORS: Belcoo 1-6 v 2-11 Derrygonnelly
Belcoo's wait for a first league win continues as league leaders Derrygonnelly Harps made it five wins from five outings at a windswept MacNean Park on Friday evening. It was an improved and spirited display from the O'Rahilly's but two goals midway through each half ultimately undid the home side.
The Harps had the stiff breeze in their favour in the opening half but Belcoo held them well for 10mins. Neil Gallagher had opened the visitors account from play while frees from Dara McKenna and Paul Ward helped the Harps into an early lead.
The O'Rahilly's sole response was a well taken left footed point from Paul McGrath after Jonathan Feeley had done well. Derrygonnelly though registered their first goal on 17minutes. A quickly taken sideline ball caught out the home defence as Paul Ward cut in from the left wing to slot into the corner.
Belcoo were competing well around the middle sector and picking up their fair share of breaks. Gerard Mellor, Christopher Leonard and Niall McGovern going well in this sector with Eoin Shiels and Dean McDermott breaking forward from wing back, carrying ball into the breeze with Paul McGrath.
Jonathan Feeley struck a free from distance into the wind but two long range points from defenders Michael Jones and Lee Jones edged the Harps further clear coming to the interval. Paul Ward landed a free as his side held a 1-6 to 0-2 half time lead.
The second half was nip and tuck for the majority but again a goal midway through the half was a sucker punch for the home side. Derrygonnelly moving 2-8 to 0-4 ahead at that juncture.
Early second half points from a Jonathan Feeley free and an Aaron Dolan effort from play were cancelled out by the marauding Lee Jones while Ward again, clipped over a free.
The goal from a turnover in the Belcoo defence killed the contest, the Harps pounced to work an easy goal from a 3v1 situation as the ball was moved forward and eventually palmed into the net. Derrygonnelly broke through again moments later but Garvan McGinley elected to fist a point.
Paul McGrath was to clip over two frees for Belcoo before a strong run from Gavin Leonard seen Paul McGrath tuck the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for the O'Rahilly's. 2-9 to 1-6.
Belcoo were to fire a half dozen wides in the second period which didn't help their cause but again, they continued to battle to the finish. It was the Harps though that ended the contest on top, two more points from Paul Ward secured an eight point victory.
