Last Gasp Goal Gives Seniors Deserved Draw
May. 21, 2017
Senior League Division 1: Belcoo 2-13 v 4-7 Erne Gaels
The Seniors rallied from six down in the last five minutes to claim a draw at home to Erne Gaels this afternoon. Paul McGrath plundered a goal with the last attack of the contest as the O'Rahilly's ended a run of three consecutive defeats with a third draw of the campaign.
The draw was the least the hosts deserved as they put a lot into the tie. More hunger, desire, grit and determination was on show in their new kit once again kindly sponsored by Stiofan Mullally of the Dugout in Blacklion.
It was a strange game at times, played in tricky conditions as the swirling crossfield wind caused a bit of havoc. Erne Gaels failing to covert a half dozen first half frees.
Belcoo had begun well, Matthew McAloon was fouled in the left sideline, Paul McGrath knocking over the free from an acute angle. The hosts were moving the ball well and the McGrath brothers, James and Paul combined to slip the on-running Jonathan Feeley the ball and he fired over a fine point from play on the left side.
A barnstorming run from wing back Ryan Leonard seen him drill over a good point while Paul McGrath took a Niall McGovern pass and raced through for a left footed score. 0-4 to no score, twelve minutes played.

Erne Gaels were to impose themselves a bit more in the game but were growing more frustrated by the minute with their missed opportunities. Oisin Kelm eventually raised the white flag midway through the half. The visitors went on to have a good spell but only had one point to show for it through Michael Og McGarrigle while Belcoo broke to good effect, Matthew McAloon notching an excellent score on the run down the left.
The visitors though would register a goal after moving through the Belcoo defence, Oisin Kelm the man to drill into the roof of the net beyond Jack O'Dolan. 1-3 to 0-5.
Belcoo though finished the half in the lead as Ryan Leonard again drove down the wing to fire over a great point while Paul McGrath arrowed over another free from near the sideline. Half time 0-7 to 1-3.

The second half was full of scores, five goals were recorded to go with ten more points in what was a high scoring affair. The order in what way things happened is a bit sketchy.
Seamus Ryder and Tommy McCaffrey entered the fray at the interval. Ryder slotted two early frees with Paul McGrath levelling things from a place ball.
Erne Gaels would hit their first of three second half goal, Keeper Jack O'Dolan had done well under a high ball but a stray fist pass coming out with the ball gave Erne Gaels possession back and they worked a goal after an almighty bit of blocking and hacking in the Belcoo goalmouth. 2-5 to 0-8.
The hosts got themselves back into it, Dean McDermott scoring from close range before he did really well to turnover an attack and set Belcoo on their way to a first goal. McDermott found Matthew McAloon who in turn slipped Jonathan Feeley in and he confidently rounded the keeper for a goal. Belcoo back ahead by point.

Erne Gaels though registered another goal, a long ball for a point dropped under O'Dolan's crossbar for a three pointer while Tommy McCaffrey knocked over a free kick.
Paul McGrath pointed for Belcoo but Seamus Ryder was to cut in from the left and fire in a fourth goal as the visitors looked destined for the points, six up with five minutes to play. 4-7 to 1-10.
Belcoo were in no mood to take nothing from this game though and they produced a string of points at the death to bring it to a one score game. James McGrath angled over a 45 while Ryan Leonard swung over a fine point from the right wing. Leonard then went close to a goal as Belcoo worked a good move through the hands, his shot grazed the crossbar to leave three between them.
The last gasp goal came from a Hail Mary by Niall McGovern which broke for Aaron Dolan, his scooped effort hit the crossbar with Paul McGrath reacting quickest to volley into the net. Belcoo were to claim the kickout but the final whistle was blown for a third draw of the season.
