U14 Girls Win Excellent Contest With Belnaleck
May. 25, 2017
U14 Girls Division 2: Belcoo 4-4 v 3-5 Belnaleck
What a tussle this was as Belcoo U14 Girls overcame a strong Belnaleck side in a fantastic game of football at a sun-kissed MacNean Park this evening, the O'Rahilly's coming from behind to win 4-4 to 3-5.
The win was gained through sheer grit and determination from each & every girl in the Blue jersey. They battled and worked hard for every minute of the encounter on what was a savage warm evening.
Ciana McGrath who'd a fine game, brings Belcoo forward in the opening half
Belnaleck are a great side and it took a big performance from the home team to come out the right side of the result. The visitors had four points to their name at the interval. The strong running Shanna Cassidy on target with three of these, the latter two from placed balls while Moya Hill knocked over the other.
Belcoo were against the wind in this period but they had defended well. Eimear Magee had a fine finish to the first half, some strong tackles thwarting Belnaleck attacks while Siofra McAloon swooped down bravely to pick up loose balls and clear the danger.
Ciana McGrath had a fabulous match, driving upfield with possession, playing good passes, making blocks and timing tackles well. It was a good burst down the right that created the opening score for Belcoo, the ball into the forward line fastened onto by the fleet footed Eve Barrett who hit a fine point on 8minutes.
Scarlett O'Connor scampers forward in the attack that seen Belcoo score their first goal
Coming to half time it was 0-4 to 0-1 in Belnaleck's favour however Belcoo worked a game levelling goal the full length of the field. Sam Martin and Ciana McGrath combined to move the ball out of the defence. Scarlett O'Connor gained possession on the right and moved upfield. She found Aine Barrett who fed Cara Gray and she slipped a fist pass to Sinead Barrett, the winger drove in and found the net, a slick move well finished for a draw at half time. 1-1 to 0-4.
There were good first half showings again by Rhianne McGuinness at wing back, reading the ball well while Sam Martin was working well in midfield against the powerful Farrah McCloskey.
Eve Barrett in control as she runs away from her marker
Belnaleck hit two early goals at the start of the second half but Belcoo hit back, Sinead Barrett cutting in from the right, she fired a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out, Barrett followed her shot and outjumped some defenders to palm the ball into the net to cut the deficit to three.
Belnaleck though moved shifty upfield to point, 2-5 to 2-1 they led with 15minutes to play. Belcoo were continuing to do well, at the back Rachel Nolan and Ciara Nolan had been introduced and both were heavily involved in stopping and blocking more chances for the visitors to score. Goalkeeper Mikayla Maguire was alert on her line and was picking out blue jerseys with all kickouts.
Niamh McAloon has a fierce second half for her team at centre back, moving forward to help out while Aoife Keaney and Sinead Barrett relieved the pressure by carrying the ball up the field.
Further forward Eve Barrett and Scarlett O'Connor were causing all sorts of problem, driving forward, weaving their way in and out of tackles while both went close to scoring goals, the crossbar denying both while some great blocks by Belnaleck also denied Belcoo.
Undeterred the O'Rahilly's did find the net, a patient bit of play between Aine and Sinead Barrett seen the ball recycled to Aoife Keaney, her long ball into the danger zone was flicked to the net by Scarlett O'Connor. Belcoo followed up with a point from Sinead Barrett after a good kick pass from Sam Martin. Draw game, 8minutes to play. 3-2 to 2-5.
Niamh McAloon wins a foot race and takes Belcoo upfield again
Belnaleck were to go ahead once more having worked a good goal. Belcoo though battled back. It was end to end, fast and frantic. Aoife Keaney pointed a free kick five minutes from time after a strong run by Sinead Barrett seen her fouled.
Ten minute to play and Belcoo hit the front, Eve Barrett did fantastically well to duck and dive her way in towards the goal, her effort was blocked, Cara Gray though was on hand to find the back of the net, capping another hard working game from her.
Belcoo now a point up with time on their side. Belnaleck pressed forward, they were denied by Ciana McGrath, Rhianne McGuinness and Rachel Nolan before a great bit of play by Niamh McAloon seen her break up a promising attack. After a stoppage in play, Belcoo would then work the ball in for a scorable free. Ciana McGrath, Sinead Barrett and Cara Gray involved before Scarlett O'Connor was upended. Aine Barrett slotted the free for a two point lead.
That was how it would finish. Belcoo two points to the good on a 4-4 to 3-5 scoreline after an excellent encounter between two very good teams. The win means Belcoo have three wins from three games in the Division.
The girls will climb Cuilagh on Monday morning before they are in action that evening against Maguiresbridge which will see the league reach the halfway stage.
