U14 Girls Make It Four Wins From Four
May. 29, 2017
U14 Girls Division 2: Maguiresbridge 0-1 v 2-17 Belcoo
Belcoo Under 14 Girls made it four wins from four as they ended a long day with a comfortable victory at Cavancarragh against Maguiresbridge. The O’Rahilly’s were up bright and early this morning to climb Cuilagh Mountain for their Feile na nOg Fundraiser before having a few hours to recover and make the bus trip to this game.

The match was only one minute old when Scarlett O’Connor weaved through the home defence to fire in a good goal. Maguiresbridge responded on three minutes Erin O’Donnell pointed. It was end to end during the opening ten minutes, Maguiresbridge causing a few problems to the Belcoo defence while the O’Rahilly’s hadn’t really found their stride, making a few unforced errors. Cara Gray though was impressing in midfield having a good tussle with her opponent.
Ciana McGrath stopped a ‘Bridge attack and broke down the right to find Sinead Barrett who raced 50yards to point on 6minutes while Aine Barrett slotted another point after Niamh McAloon turned over an attack at the other end. 1-2 to 0-1 on 10minutes.
Mikayla Maguire was going very well at wing back while Sam Martin was getting on plenty of ball in the middle third of the field. Further back Eimear Magee and Rachel Nolan got out in front to prevent their players gaining possession as Belcoo began to win all their battle and take a firm grip on the game.
Aoife Keaney come under a bit of pressure as he goes to catch the ball
Two points in 60seconds from Aine Barrett seen Belcoo find their stride, Aoife Keaney and Sam Martin working well together as they carried the ball forward and slipped Barrett in for the first score while Cara Gray won the next kickout and found Barrett to score again.
Another double blast of points in a minute hoisted Belcoo eight clear. Mikayla Maguire was sharp to a ball on the wing, she burst past her player and found Aoife Keaney who moved forward and split the posts while Cara Gray again won the next kickout and fed Sinead Barrett who broke through for a neat point. 1-6 to 0-1.
Belcoo would continue to hold sway, Ciana McGrath and Scarlett O’Connor doing well on the right before Eve Barrett gathered the ball out wide and sprinted in towards the goals, clipping over an excellent point. Cara Gray and Sinead Barrett would do well on the left to set up Aine Barrett for another score while goalkeeper Hollie McMulkin made a good save from Sinead Barrett.

The half was to end with another Belcoo point as a strong Sam Martin tackle helped turn the ball over, she fisted the ball off to the supporting Sinead Barrett for another well taken point. Half time: Belcoo ahead 1-9 to 0-1.
The O’Rahilly’s made three changes at the interval. Riona Keaney, Siofra McAloon and Eimear Gray all entered the fray. The scoreboard began to tick again three minutes into the half, Ciana McGrath's crossfield ball to Aoife Keaney seen Keaney feed Sinead Barrett for a point. A goal soon followed, Sam Martin fired an effort across the goalmouth, Cara Gray retrieved the ball, passed towards Aoife Keaney who touched the ball beyond the goalkeeper with Aine Barrett kicking it over the goal line.
Belcoo continued to pin back the home team. Siofra McAloon turned over attacks on two occasions, Mikayla Maguire kept going well on the wing while Ciara Nolan and Eimear Gray judged the bounce well to get their hands on the ball to thwart attacks also. The scores kept flowing at regular rates, Sam Martin doing well to set up Aoife Keaney for a point, Sinead Barrett slotted another while Mikayla Maguire broke forward to kick a great point.

Sinead Barrett’s last act of the evening was to kick another while Roina Keaney and Ciana McGrath completed the scoring with two great efforts late in the game. 2-17 to 0-1. There is still work to be done, players need to play with the head up more, some girls were in good positions but never given the pass, free kicks need converted and the first touch can always improve. Overall though, it was a great day for the Under 14 girls, having conquered Cuilagh and claimed a fourth league win on the spin to remain unbeaten.
