Seniors Woes Continues As Ederney Win In Belcoo

Box Score

Jun. 4, 2017

Senior League Division 1: Belcoo 0-12 v 1-16 Ederney

Belcoo Seniors woes continues as the half way stage of the season approaches and the elusive first win still evades the side. Saturday evening seen the O’Rahilly’s go down 1-16 to 0-12 at home to Ederney. There wasn’t a whole pile in the game but the visitors were five to the good at the interval and Belcoo never really threatened to mount a serious comeback.

Ederney had the elements in their favour in the first period and hit their stride much quicker. Three points were on the board before Belcoo raised the white flag. Ryan Maguire landed the first from play cutting in from the right while free kicks by Paul McCusker and Christopher Snow established an early lead.

Jonathan Feeley got Belcoo on the scoreboard with a well taken point, Feeley was Belcoo’s brightest attacker on the night, winning any ball sent in his way. Points were traded, Ryan Leonard with the Belcoo score before Ederney netted the games only goal midway through the half. An attack down the right seen the ball transferred to an unmarked Mark McCauley 20yards from goal and he moved forward to fire into the left corner. 1-4 to 0-2.

By the interval it was 1-8 to 0-6, the sides sharing eight points in the closing 10minutes of the first period. Dean McDermott knocked over from close range, Paul McGrath from distance into the wind before Feeley slotted an excellent free off the deck out on the right wing before the same player added another from play.

Ederney operating a few sweepers in the second half curtailed the Belcoo attack while when they had possession, they came forward in droves. Clipping over neat points to keep the scoreboard ticking. Again Paul McCusker, Darren McCusker, Mark McCauley all chipped in.

For Belcoo, a goal to ignite a comeback never looked likely. Jonathan Feeley hit three frees in the second half with Philip Leonard coming off the bench to kick two long range score while Paul McGrath split the posts after a mazy run.

1-16 to 0-12 it would end. The home side still await a first league win and they travel this Friday to League Leaders Derrygonnelly for a 8pm throw in. Ederney on the other half have just lost once all season and sit third in the table. They go to Teemore on Friday.
