U12s Win Enjoyable Opening Game With Belnaleck

Under 12 Section B: Belcoo 6-14 (26) v 4-10 (18) Belnaleck
Belcoo Under 12’s got off to a winning start with a 6-14 to 4-10 win over Belnaleck in an enjoyable encounter at MacNean Park. There was plenty of good football on show from the two sides as all players worked hard for their teams.

The contest took it’s time to liven up as a low scoring first quarter seen Belnaleck hold a 0-2 to 0-1 advantage. Michael Burns popping the Belcoo score after good work from Sinead Barrett. The hosts almost worked a goal coming to the break, Sam Martin, Thomas Parker and Patrick Magee involved but a great save by Aiden Kelly denied Magee.
The game came to life in the second quarter with some free flowing football and well taken scores. By the break it was now 2-7 (11) to 3-4 (10), the visitors still ahead. It was an action packed 15mins, Michael Burns and Eoin Corrigan did the scoring but they had several impressive displays from the girls on the team supplying them with their chances to apply the finishes.

Lorcan Leonard may have been beaten twice in goals but he also made three good saves as well as providing good kickouts and clearances. Siofra McAloon and Cara Gray had fantastic games in defence as they were out in front and timed their tackles to perfection. Scarlett O’Connor and Sam Martin were seeing plenty of the ball in the middle third and making good use of it with Eve Barrett working hard in defence while Sinead Barrett grow into the game in the forward line.
Belnaleck had made the better opening having reeled off four points before Michael Burns was to bang in a quick 1-1, Sinead Barrett and Eoin Corrigan combined to create the point while Corrigan fielded a kickout magnificently and slipped Burns in for a goal. Corrigan then added a point of his own but Belnaleck were to hit two goals to move 2-6 to 1-3 ahead at this juncture.
Belcoo though finished the half well. Scarlett O’Connor set up Eoin Corrigan for a point before O’Connor and Burns combined to allow Corrigan in for the first of his three goals. On the stroke of half time, Siofra McAloon won back the ball in defence and it began a slick move that seen Eve Barrett and Sinead Barrett work the ball forward before Corrigan thumped in a crisply hit goal to leave one between them.

The O’Rahilly’s took a firm grip of things in Quarter 3 to move 5-9 (19) to 2-8 (12) up as they held the visitors to just one point in this period. Again Lorcan Leonard was called upon to make two good saves while at the other end the scoreboard started to tick at a regular rate. Sinead Barrett fed Michael Burns for an early goal while Eoin Corrigan followed up with another.
Points were flowing as Michael Burns and Scarlett O’Connor worked a one two from a free for Burns to score while another excellent full length move yielded a point from Sinead Barrett. Siofra McAloon again strong in defence to take the ball out, Sam Martin, O’Connor, Abbie McGovern and Eve Barrett were all involved before Sinead split the posts. Eoin Corrigan tagged on a free with Burns and Barrett on target again.
Patrick Magee holds on tight as a challenge comes in
The final quarter seen Belcoo maintain their advantage. Aodhan Cullen was now in goals and he made a good save before keeping out a penalty kick, again his kickouts were accurate and Belcoo swiftly returned to the far end of the field. Riona Keaney had done well since her introduction in defence while Emilie McCallion, Nathan McGovern, Abbie McGovern, Lisa Lavery, Eimear Gray and Kayce Sweeney were busy in what was the first competitive fixture for a lot of them.
Patrick Magee did well around the middle third creating chances and taking a good point himself in the final quarter while Nathan Carroll Magee’s crossfield ball seen Sinead Barrett point before Siofra McAloon did well to start another move that seen Eve Barrett land a neat point.
Sinead Barrett had the final say of the contest as she hit a late goal and a point as Belcoo secured a eight point victory on a 6-14 to 4-10 scoreline. Up next Belcoo host Teemore on Thursday evening, throw in 7.30pm, players to be at the pitch for 7pm.
