Roslea Edge Great Under 16 Battle
Jul. 27, 2017
U16 Section C: Roslea 3-9 v 2-9 Belcoo
A great Under 16 battle seen Roslea finish with their noses in front at Shamrock Park this evening, winners 3-9 to 2-9. The sides were level on several occasions with the O'Rahilly's ahead by the minimum at the interval. There was plenty of hard work, commitment, effort and quality football and show by the two sides over the hour.
Lawrence McKeown moves forward in the opening half for Belcoo
The hosts warmed to the contest better in the early exchanges and had three points on the board before Belcoo registered. Tomas McPhilips (2) and Sean Lynam the scorers for Roslea while Lawrence McKeown had drilled narrowly wide after a long run going for goal, it was Oran McCann who pointed a good free from distance when Josh 'stepover' Killilea was fouled.
Conor McKeown would hit the post going for a point before Darragh Clerkin pushed his side 3 clear again on 14minutes. Belcoo were now finding their feet though as Matthew Mulvey and Mark Ferguson took command at the back with Cormac McHugh, Lawrence McKeown and Oran McCann getting on a lot of ball around the middle. Josh Killilea was leading his much taller opponent a merry dance on the wing and it was through Killilea Belcoo created a game levelling goal.
Alert to a break ball, Killilea fed Oisin O'Loughlin who turned his man, bore down on goal and fired low into the left corner of the net. 1-1 to 0-4. Roslea went straight down the field but a fantastic double block on the goal line by Emmett McGuinness denied them a goal while Oisin Leonard, Mark Ferguson and Matthew Mulvey combined to thwart the danger. This galvanised Belcoo as they were to finish the half strongly.
Oisin O'Loughlin & Josh Killilea apply pressure to Roslea captain Matthew McMahon
Killilea, McHugh and Conor McKeown combined on the right to set up Lawrence McKeown for a good point before the same player rifled in a goal, assisted again by Killilea. 2-2 to 0-4 Belcoo found themselves ahead.
Roslea mounted a rally but good goalkeeping by Marc Stewart forced a forward to shoot wide on 24mins. The hosts however would level coming to the interval. A 27th minute 1-1 blast with McPhilips registering the point while Mark Ferguson's determined tackle denied a shot at goal, the loose ball though soccer'd into the net by a Roslea attacker.
Belcoo though held a single point advantage at the break, Emmett McGuinness doing some great work on the ball before patiently offloading to Lawrence McKeown for a fabulous score from just inside the 45m line. Half time Roslea 1-5 v 2-3 Belcoo.
The O'Rahilly's began the second period well, three early points were registered as Mark Ferguson and Emmett McGuinness were fouled, Oran McCann slotted both frees over the black spot while Oisin Leonard raced upfield to fire over a fine point from the right wing after Matthew Mulvey and Killilea had combined.
Centre half back Oisin Leonard got forward to hit two fine scores in the second half
Roslea hit back as full forward Tomas McPhilips capitalised on a hesitant bit of play close to the Belcoo goals as he fired a loose ball to the net to leave one between them again.
Oisin Leonard restored a two point cushion after Killilea and McKeown drove upfield with another superb score however McPhilips tapped over a free and Charlie McMahon tied the game at 2-7 to 2-7.
Everything was fiercely contested around a busy middle third of the field. No questions asked, it was full blooded for every ball. Some great tackles, turnover and passages of play set up a tight final 10minutes.
An excellent individual run and drilled point from Lawrence McKeown had Belcoo ahead once more. Back came Roslea, McPhilips the marksman from a placed ball. The hosts would get what proved the winning score as Charlie McMahon's dangerous ball seen Sean Lynam win a foot race with Belcoo keeper and defender to poke the ball into the corner. 3-8 to 2-8.
Emmett McGuinness looks to offload the ball in the attacking third of the field
Belcoo battled back but having been clinical all night in front of goal, the shooting boots deserted them as they squandered five scoring chances before Roslea tagged on another to move four clear.
Oran McCann would bring it back to three points but Roslea would defend well in the closing minutes to pressure the O'Rahilly's attacks which came to nothing as the hosts held on for the win.
It was a great battle between the two well matched sides who will no doubt meet again in the Divisions later on.
