Jul. 30, 2017
UNDER 14 DIVISON 2 LEAGUE FINAL: Belnaleck 6-4 v 4-4 Belcoo
It was another tight battle between Belnaleck and Belcoo in the Girls Division 2 Final this morning, Belnaleck edged it 6-4 to 4-4. Our girls though were fantastic as they continue to improve, the odd kick of the ball the difference by the end of an absorbing encounter.
U14 Girls prior to throw in
We knew our girls would leave it all on the field and that's what they did. The bit of luck required wasn't there though as scrappy and unfortunate goals were conceded in the second half.
Belcoo had themselves ahead at the interval 3-1 to 2-1 having started slowly, they edged themselves in front coming to the break. Belnaleck's Shanna Cassidy, who was named player of the match, had a point on the board inside a minute before she fired in her first goal on 6minutes.
Belcoo got themselves into the contest despite the early setback and Aoife Keaney would hit a goal and point to tie matters by the 10th minute.
Sinead Barrett drives at the Belnaleck defence in the first half
Belcoo were beginning to dominate as they pressured the Belnaleck kickouts. Sam Martin was having a fine game in the middle sector with Rhianne McGuinness driving from the back while Sinead Barrett, Scarlett O'Connor and Eve Barrett were lively in the forward line.
Cassidy was to register another goal but Belcoo had turned over a number of attacks, Siofra McAloon, Niamh McAloon and Eimear Magee all tackling strongly while Ciana McGrath and Aine Barrett were getting through a pile of work.
The O'Rahilly's again levelled the contest after Cara Gray had done well on the right before Eve Barrett got possession and glided in towards the net and fired into the corner.
Aisling Keenan has an attempt at goal as she is pressurised by Belcoo defenders
It remained tight, Aisling Keenan made a number of good blocks at the back for the winners but some tigerish tackling and play by Belcoo seen them create two goal chances, Sinead Barrett drilling narrowly wide with Ciana McGrath denied by good pressure from defenders.
A minute before half time, Belcoo hit their third goal, Eve Barrett swooped on a loose ball before racing in towards goal and confidently finishing to the net. Half time 3-1 to 2-1.
Belnaleck were level within two minutes of the restart having been awarded a penalty kick. Cassidy tucked the ball into the left corner. It was end to end stuff, Sinead Barrett was fouled after a long run, Aoife Keaney knocked over the free to lead again but back came Belnaleck with Cassidy, her goal bound shot was blocked by Niamh McAloon, the rebound thumped back towards the goals and found the net having deflected off Eimear Magee and looped into the corner past a helpless Mikayla Maguire.
The O'Rahilly's rallied again, Sinead Barrett fouled once more as she carried the ball forward, Aoife Keaney deadly accurate from the placed ball, 4-1 to 3-3 Belnaleck up by one.
It was a fierce battle for every ball, Aine Barrett came to the fore for her side, getting hands on a load of possession and driving upfield with Ciana McGrath, Cara Gray, Sam Martin and Sinead Barrett continuing to carry the ball forward.
Aine Barrett beats Shanna Cassidy to a loose ball
Belnaleck had a good spell, as Cassidy and Farah McCloskey pointed before they had a bit of luck by registering a fortunate goal. A long ball was pumped in and the big bounce of the ball seen it end in the net. It was a blow. 5-4 to 3-3.
Belcoo though continued to work hard, Belnaleck however hit their final score, a sixth goal. Our girls did what they always do, battle to the end and had some chances to cut the deficit. Eve Barrett registered a point while Ciana McGrath went close going for a goal as her shot whistled across the goalmouth. A strong Aine Barrett run seen her go close for a goal while the Belnaleck keeper made a good save from Eve Barrett.
Belcoo would find a goal near the end, Rachel Nolan slipping the ball to Eve Barrett who once again scampered away from her marker to find the back of the net. Belnaleck held out though for the victory on a 6-4 to 4-4 scoreline.
Congrats to the victors and well done to our girls who gave a magnificent account of themselves. It has been a tremendous season both in the league and the Feile na nOg, they should be very proud of themselves.
