Gritty Display From Belcoo Sees Them Record Great U16 Win
Aug. 31, 2017
U16 Division 4: Belcoo 3-14 v 3-8 Aughadrumsee
Belcoo U16's avenged a 16point defeat earlier in the season this evening as they recorded a great 3-14 to 3-8 victory over Aughadrumsee in MacNean Park.

From the outset the O'Rahilly's were on it. Defensively superb early doors with some terrific turnovers, Mark Ferguson, Oisin Leonard, Dara Flanagan, Matthew Mulvey and Oisin O'Louglin were all winning their battles and taking clever kickouts from the reliable Jamie Ray in goals as they held the visitors to a single point in the first quarter.
There was two minutes on the clock when Belcoo landed their first score. An Oran McCann 45 dropping into the danger zone, the alert Josh Killilea snapped up the ball and fired over with his left foot.
Oran McCann claimed a 'mark' from the kickout and slipped the ball to Lawrence McKeown who pointed. McKeown slotted another after a fabulous bit of defending by Ferguson seen Belcoo work upfield, Conor McKeown and Emmett McGuinness linking well to provide the assist.
Captain Oisin Leonard had another superb hour in the defence for his side
Lawrence McKeown then struck the post going for goal before retiring injured for the night. Belcoo though kept the momentum built. Matthew Mulvey made a superbly timed tackle to knock the ball from an Aughadrumsee forward who was running through, Oisin O'Loughlin picked up the loose ball and he found Dara Flanagan on the right wing, he carried possession to Cormac McHugh who fed Emmett McGuinness for an excellent point. McGuinness followed up with another good score after Patrick Martin had done well before he somehow danced between three defenders to score a brilliant goal. 1-5 to 0-1 Belcoo led 16minutes in.
Aughadrumsee were to battle back and outscored the hosts four points to one before the interval, Patrick Martin drilling over the Belcoo score for a 1-6 to 0-5 lead at the break.
The O'Rahilly's began the second half in blistering form, Cormac McHugh won the throw up, found Josh Killilea who absolutely sliced open the visiting defence with an outrageous through ball, Patrick Martin hadn't to break stride, he claimed the ball and drilled to the net. Aughadrumsee responded with two points but Oran McCann fielded a great ball in the middle sector, found Dara Flanagan off the shoulder and he played a simple fist pass to Emmett McGuinness for another well taken score.

It would start a dominate spell for the home side who made their burst into a good lead again. Josh Killilea ran in for a brilliant individual score, Emmett McGuinness landed another from play before Oran McCann slotted over a free from the right wing when Fiachra McAloon had been fouled. 2-10 to 0-7 on 40minutes.
Aughadrumsee weren't done and they worked a goal, Belcoo though responded with one of their own, Killilea the architect as Conor McKeown broke through and produced the coolest of finishes as he lifted the ball over the keeper who had started to creep from his line.
McGuinness again slotted a point before Conor McKeown landed a left footed score with McCann again on target from a placed ball at an acute angle. Belcoo now 3-13 to 1-7 up with 15minutes to play.
Patrick Martin was a great outlet in the second half for his side
It's been a trend this season as the side tires, only one more point scored in the closing quarter and it was the last kick of the game as the excellent Oisin Leonard got upfield to slot over. Leonard had a fine hour on the dangerous Enda McCabe while the defence had done extremely well until the final quarter as the visitors began to find holes and they were to hit two goals and a point to set up a nervy enough finish but Belcoo held out to record a six point success. A great turnaround from an earlier meeting this season.
They have to do it all again on Sunday in the Championship as they meet Division 3 side Roslea in the preliminary round at the Derrylin venue at 6.30pm, bus leaving 5.15pm. Roslea won the sectional fixture earlier in the campaign by 3points so another tight game is likely. The U16s then go to Ederney next Thursday, Ederney have two league wins from two at present and Belcoo just edged a previous meeting this year so it is a busy and very competitive week for our U16 side who made a brilliant start to it with tonights victory.
