U12s Begin Divisions With Great Win
Sep. 3, 2017
U12 Division 2 Round 1: Derrylin 5-1 (11) v 10-21 (41) Belcoo
The under 12s had a good win against Derrylin today on what was a breezy afternoon in the O’Connell’s home ground. The combination of a reduced home side panel and an excellent work rate from the O’Rahillys led to the margin recorded on the scoreboard. Playing with the wind in the first quarter, Belcoo had a fine start, winning the throw-in and recording 4-2, Michael Burns (3-1) and Eoin Corrigan (1-1) before Derrylin answered with a soft goal which Lorcan Leonard was unlucky to concede in the twelfth minute. There were some fine passages of play from Belcoo, hungry and playing with their heads up to find their team mates. Michael Burns split the posts for a third time just before the whistle.

Despite being against the breeze in the second quarter, Belcoo held their form. Midfielders Sam Martin and Sinead Barrett were stronger than their opponents and continued to keep the ball in Derrylin’s half. Scarlett O’Connor made plenty of great runs, using the wings and gathering the long ball. Points were converted by the visitors, four more from Michael Burns, two from Eoin Corrigan and one from Sinead Barrett. Derrylin registered a second goal leaving the scoreboard reading 4-10 (18) to 2-0 (4) at the end of the quarter.
Quarter number three started in Belcoo’s favour again, with Sam Martin doing well and driving forward for Eoin Corrigan to put the ball over the bar. It was a busy spell for Nathan McGovern in the forward line winning the second point of the quarter. Rachel Nolan worked hard for the team, carrying the ball forward and unlucky not to find the back of the net. Nathan Carroll-Magee also put in a valiant effort, seeing plenty of ball and registering two points. The O’Rahilly’s continued to work as a unit, using space and width with Eoin Corrigan finishing with goals on four more occasions and Michael Burns with three more points. The home side failed to register a score in this period, a reflection on our back line of Siofra McAloon who had a great game and the ever reliable Cara Gray.

Belcoo’s winning attitude and performance continued into the fourth quarter when some substitutions were made for our younger players with Lisa Lavery and Emilie McCallion tackling bravely and Rhys Ray and Finn Maes making good runs to win the ball. Aodhan Cullen in goals made several good saves and effective kickouts. Movements of play involving Riona Keaney and Eve Barrett led to a further goal by Eoin Corrigan and a goal and four points by Michael Burns before Derrylin replied with a point. The home side were to have the final flurry of attacks with three goals in the dying minutes of the game.
Training continues on Tuesday from 7pm to 8.15pm as the U12’s now look forward to our Round 2 fixture, a home game against St. Pat’s on 9th September at 4pm.
