Reserves Advance To Championship Final
Sep. 3, 2017
Reserve B Championship Semi Final in Tempo: Belcoo 2-13 v 3-4 Aughadrumsee
Our Reserves booked their place in the Championship Final following a good 2-13 to 3-4 victory over Aughadrumsee this afternoon having survived a late scare with Aughadrumsee banging in two goals in a minute to get within 3points with six minutes to play.
Nowhere to go as Baz, Coxy & Chic have him surrounded
Belcoo though were worthy winners on the day having controlled large portions of the contest they could and should have been more than five up at the interval as a few chances were squandered in the final third, looking goals when points were the better option. In saying all that, Belcoo goalkeeper Gary Doherty made two saves in the opening half to deny certain goals, the first of these a simply stunning save to claw the ball to safety when it looked like the forward had to score.
Barry McGovern raced 50yards forward to slot over the opening score in the second minute while there was a ten-minute wait for another score. Corner forward Niall Cullen the scorer on this occasion. Some good interplay between Declan Leonard and Ian Corrigan seen Gary Maguire knock over a third Belcoo score.
Defensively Belcoo were going well, Brendan McPartland turning over some moves with Shane McAloon and Ryan McGovern sweeping up several loose ball while Brian Cox and Gerard Mellor controlled the mid sector.
The O'Rahilly's continued to hold sway. Cox took a 'Mark' before finding Matthew McAloon with a pass, Gary Maguire got involved as Niall Cullen tapped over another point for a four-nil lead.
Head Down & Drive On as Brendy McP comes out of two challenges
Belcoo registered their first goal on 18minutes, defenders Martin Corrigan and Brendan McPartland combined as Corrigan's shot dropped into the keepers arms, Brendy the furthest man forward disposed the keeper as he came out, Barry McGovern gathered the loose ball and returned it to an empty net with the left foot, yes, Baz actually kicked the ball on his left foot.
Aughadrumsee were to respond with a goal and point before Michael McGourty seen an effort at goal blocked on the goal-line however Gary Maguire pointed in the same attack. Coming to half time Brian Cox and Barry McGovern added points between an Aughadrumsee strike for a 1-7 to 1-2 interval lead.
The first score of the second period was a goal, Gerard McHugh doing really well on the right wing to wriggle free from his man, he offloaded to Niall Cullen who played a great diagonal ball into Ian Corrigan who took it first time and angled a fine kickpass across to Gary Maguire who hadn't to break stride, he collected and fired into the net via the inside of the post.
Belcoo moved into a comfortable position as Matthew McAloon finished off a slick exchange with Declan Leonard and Brian Cox while Niall Cullen popped over a great left footed effort. 2-9 to 1-3 with 15minutes to play.
Gerard McHugh turns out of trouble during the second half
All was going well but Aughadrumsee had created a number of goal chances which they'd failed to take. That was until the 53rd minute when the rifled in two goals in those 60seconds to leave just a kick of a ball between the sides at 2-9 to 3-3.
Belcoo registered their first score in some 12minutes when substitutes Seamus Conlon and Aidan McGrath combined down the left with Conlon firing over. Aughadrumsee responded but as the game entered added time Belcoo pushed on. Brian Cox stroked two frees, the first a fine effort with the outside of the boot while Gerard McHugh clipped over a good point with the last kick of the game.
Congratulations to the players and management as they look forward to the Final in a fortnight time.
