Good Showing From Belcoo But Kinawley Girls Leave Winners
Sep. 11, 2017
U13 Girls Section A: Belcoo 0-5 v 2-9 Kinawley
Belcoo U13 Girls put up a good show against a strong Kinawley side this evening before the visitors pushed on midway through the second half to win 2-9 to 0-5. The young O'Rahilly's continued to show great signs of improvement and a tough assignment like this against a very well organised Kinawley outfit will stand to them.
The game was keenly contested throughout with some good passages of play, stout defending and well taken scores by both sides.
Sinead Barrett fires over a point in the second half
It was Belcoo who raised the first white flag in the 6th minute as Sinead Barrett broke through to fire over. Kinawley were looking dangerous but Belcoo had stifled them for the first 10mins. Corner back Siofra McAloon sticking tight to her stronger opponent with Ciara McGuinness, playing her first game, getting stuck in well against a physically stronger opposite number also while Riona Keaney was again impressing in goals, she had made a few early saves and cleared her lines well before the visitors netted a goal from close range in the 11th minute.
Belcoo's response was immediate, Mikayla Maguire finishing a full length move with a well take score. Kinawley slotted one at the other end but by the interval the game was tied 0-3 to 1-1 (3). Sinead Barrett drilling over from distance.
Belcoo goalkeeper Riona Keaney made a number of fine saves this evening
Sam Martin and her midfield counterpart had a great battle throughout with the Belcoo half back line getting a good testing by a very lively half forward line of Kinawleys.
Kinawley had the wind advantage in the second half and they were to work some good early scores through clever movement while playing the right pass at the right time to carve out the opening for the shot. A goal and point were hit within five minutes but it could have been more but for some good saves by Riona Keaney and well timed tackles by defenders.
Sinead Barrett continued to carry the main scoring threat and a good move down the right with Sam Martin, Scarlett O'Connor and Eve Barrett seen Sinead point again.

Kinawley pegged Belcoo back for five minutes and added four points to their tally to move 2-6 to 0-5 ahead with just five minutes to play. Another point was added before Belcoo's Sinead Barrett broke through to point after some patient play, Rachel Nolan and Mikayla Maguire involved in recycling the ball out of the left corner to Barrett for the score.
The visitors kicked two more points by the finish to see out the win but all in all it was a good showing from our Girls who competed really well throughout. Training continues Wednesday night from 6.45pm to 8pm. They have the bye next week but will train on Monday.
