Erne Gaels Claim Reserve Championship Title
Sep. 16, 2017
RESERVE B CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Erne Gaels 3-13 v 0-9 Belcoo
A clinical Erne Gaels outfit claimed the Reserve B Championship this evening on a 3-13 to 0-9 scoreline. Belcoo has enough of the ball on the night but scores were hard got, while at the other end, Shane Rooney, Mark Deery and Ronan Cox took the chances they were presented with as they accounted for the bulk of their sides scores.
Their was 60seconds on the clock when Shane Rooney netted the opening goal of the game, getting free inside to tuck the ball into the corner. Belcoo responded well with a Gary Maguire free and point from play by Matthew McAloon however in the remaining 26minutes of the half, just one white flag was raised.
Ronan Cox was to pop over two frees with Rooney, Oisin Kelm, Mark Deery and Paul Ward all on target for Erne Gaels. The Belcoo response was a point from play by Gary Maguire who claimed a great pass from Niall Cullen coming to half time.
Belcoo had a few sniffs at goal in the opening period, the hardworking Gerard McHugh stinging the hands of the keeper with other half chances going a begging. By the interval it was 1-6 to 0-3 in the Belleek men's favour.
Belcoo were sharply out of the blocks in the second half, three points in five minutes had them back in the tie, Matthew McAloon slotting two frees either side of a great long range point by Seamus Conlon.
The good work was undone in an instant as Belleek's first attack of the second half, some 7minutes into it, seen them work the ball through the Belcoo defence for a Ronan Cox goal. 2-6 to 0-6.
Belcoo would huff and puff as they retained the ball, worked hard and battled gamely in search of a way back into the game but some 20minutes would pass before they scored again. Despite seeing little of the ball, Erne Gaels made great use of it when they had it, scoring with virtual every effort at the posts.
Shane Rooney and substitute Daniel McGuillon had more points on the board before Mark Deery netted a third goal. It was job done at 3-8 to 0-6 with ten minutes to play. The winners knocked over another five points while late efforts from Barry McGovern, James Gillespie and Ian Corrigan of Belcoo left 13 between them at the finish.
On a wet evening in Derrygonnelly, Erne Gaels were well worth their win. Commisserations to the Belcoo players and management while we also wish a speedy recovery to Marty Corrigan who was stretchered off on 40minutes.
Tonight's game draws the Reserves season to a close. The next Adult game will be next Saturday nights Intermediate Final as the Seniors take on Lisanskea at 7.30pm in Brewster Park.
