Devenish Win Low Scoring U12 Affair
Sep. 16, 2017
U12 Section B: Belcoo 0-6 v 0-12 Devenish
Devenish won out in the clash of the neighbours in a low scoring U12 game. The Garrison side took the points in a good spirited affair in a rain sodden MacNean Park. The home side worked hard for possession but found scores difficult to come by. Bo th sets of defences protected their goals well with neither side breaching the other’s rearguard - no goals on this occasion.
Devenish were first to register on the scoreboard followed by an equaliser from Michael Burns. The Devenish side were on top but wasted a lot of good chances to stretch out their lead, registering a total of four points for the quarter. Belcoo managed three points for the same period, all from Michael Burns with Thomas Parker and Rachel Nolan working hard up front for the home side.
The second quarter again saw the visitors on top being denied three certain goal chances by the strong defence line of Lorcan Leonard, Siofra McAloon and Cara Gray, all putting their bodies on the line for the cause. Devenish scored four points in this quarter, it could have been more but for some stout defending. A long ball from Michael Burns found Eoin Corrigan in space who dribbled the ball soccer style into the Garrison goal mouth only to fire narrowly wide at the far post. Belcoo failed to register a score in this quarter but showed good work rate from the busy Nathan McGovern and Eve Barrett.
The third quarter saw the best of the young O’Rahilly’s with some great tackling from the half-backs Nathan Carroll-Magee and Scarlett O’Connor as well as some good tracking back from Sam Martin and Sinead Barrett. Eoin Corrigan and Michael Burns battled hard to get the ball forward but the Devenish defence held firm. Two points a piece in this quarter, Eoin and Michael keeping the scoreboard ticking over with two free kicks.
The last quarter saw the introduction of a few of the younger players, Riona Keaney, Lisa Lavery and Rhys Ray, all eager to get on the ball and out in front of their markers. Belcoo would register one point in this quarter from Michael Burns, the visitors registering two points to finish the game 12-6 in favour of Devenish, a fair result considering the weather conditions.
