Seniors: Erne Gaels 1-5 Belcoo 0-12
May. 21, 2010
Belcoo travelled to Belleek on Friday evening and returned with their 100% winning record still intact. In truth it was a comfortable victory against a side who just seemed happy to not lose too heavily. Erne Gaels got the first score of the game and that was to be the only time the home side were in front over the course of the 60minutes.
Belcoo struggled in the early stages with the number of defensive players Erne Gaels employed, forcing the visitors to shooting from distance. However an excellent score from an almost impossible angle by wing back Niall McGovern and a long range Ciarán Flaherty score put Belcoo a point up after 15minutes.
Belcoo were to lose the services of their influential captain Stephen Maguire early in the half following an ankle injury but they didn't allow this loss to affect them. A close range Flaherty free was followed by another equally impressive score from McGovern, again from a difficult angle. Erne Gaels responded from a free kick but Belcoo finished the half with a well taken score from Ronan Ferguson. Half Time: Erne Gaels 0-2 Belcoo 0-5.
John Carrigan was introduced at half time and he was involved immediately setting up Paul McGrath who kicked a nice left footed score. Ciarán Flaherty completed a good move with a well taken score as Belcoo took complete control of the game. Sean McNulty and John Carrigan were winning midfield while Emmet Scollan and Declan Leonard were dominant in defense as Erne Gaels struggled to work the ball into scoreable positions. Further points from John Carrigan, Ciarán Flaherty and Ronan Ferguson stretched Belcoo lead and it took another place ball for Erne Gaels to get on the score board. Sean McNulty pointed to put Belcoo 0-11 to 0-4 in front with 10 minutes remaining.
A short James McGrath kick out to Niall Leonard, seen the latter lose possession and allow Seamus Ryder to score a goal following a audacious chip from all of 35yards to get Erne Gaels within 4points of the league leaders. Belcoo next attack seen substitute Shane McCabe spray a long racking pass to Brian Cox who was fouled while rounding the goalkeeper and referee Noel Davis had no hesitation in giving a penalty. John Carrigan stepped up but he seen his low drive from 11metres saved by the Erne Gaels goalkeeper to give the home side renewed hope of snatching something from the game.
This however never looked likely, both sides traded a point over the closing moments with John Carrigan getting Belcoo's point from a free kick. It is another victory for Belcoo as they have now collected all 12points available to them this season so far.
