Belcoo Girls On Tour
Sep. 24, 2017
Belcoo U14 Girls had an enjoyable day at the Kilmacud 7’s on Saturday where the standard of football on show was off a very high order. Our young girls competed well and put up some spirited displays against Donegal, Meath, Galway and Cavan opponents.
After a good evenings craic in Gormanston Park last night and fierce feed upon arrival the girls were fuelled with a good breakfast this morning before hitting the road from our base camp in Meath to Kilmacud for the commencement of the competition at 10am.
The opening encounter seen Belcoo take on Aodh Ruadh of Donegal. The opposition were physically strong and really fast. The O’Rahilly’s had the wind advantage in the first ten minutes and would hit 2-1 in that period. Sinead Barrett running in for a well taken goal before Ciana McGrath knocked over a point.
Sam Martin was to get on the end of a ball over the top to prod the ball to the net while taking a heavy knock to her back. Aodh Ruadh however were fit to run in a number of goals in the second period to run out comfortably winners.
In the second game Belcoo performed really well and were leading at the interval 1-2 to 1-0. Scarlett O’Connor banged over two fine efforts before Sinead Barrett drove in for a goal. Still going well early in the second half, O’Connor had added a third point before a mad 90seconds seen the O’Rahilly’s concede 4 goals. They managed to pull a late goal back from Aine Barrett but St Peter’s of Meath claimed the victory.
The third fixture was against a really strong Moycullen side from Galway, just a point from Sinead Barrett was all that was registered although their was great showing from Aine Barrett, Cara Gray, Ciara Nolan and Mikayla Maguire in this game.
The knockout game seen Belcoo face Laragh from Cavan. It was tight for a good period in the opening half, Mikayla Maguire thumping in a good goal for her side but Laragh were a few goals to the good by half time.
The second period just yielded two points, both by the Cavan side but Belcoo were defensively solid. Sam Martin now operating as sweeper keeper doing well with Niamh McAloon, Aine Barrett and Scarlett O’Connor getting on plenty of ball.
Throughout the day the girls battled really hard and never gave in against their bigger and more experienced opponents. They were a credit and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They returned to Gormanstown Park for another fine meal, craic and some sleep.
On Sunday morning after Breakfast they made the trip to Croke Park to support our Fermanagh Ladies in their All Ireland Final. A dramatic conclusion to the game seen Fermanagh snatch a draw with a late penalty much to the delight of our girls, the craic continued while a McDonald's in Blanchardstown on route home kncoked a few of them out, as they slept most of the way home.
A great weekend was had, many thanks to all who helped organise and well done girls, memories were made for sure.
