Gritty U13 Girls Display Sees Them Turnover Knockninny
Oct. 12, 2017
SECTION A: Playoff Game: Belcoo 0-3 v 0-2 Knockninny
Belcoo U13 Girls edged an incredibly tight affair with Knockninny this evening at a windswept MacNean Park, 0-3 to 0-2 the scoreline after an action packed 40minutes. The result of this playoff encounter now means Belcoo will meet Devenish again, next Monday to see who will compete in Division 1 at the end of season Divisional Semi Finals.
Belcoo had lost by 6points to Knockninny 10days ago but a number of positional switches this evening reaped the rewards. At times in the closing stages, the O’Rahilly’s rode their luck as the visitors screwed pressurised efforts wide while their was a few close calls and scrambles near the goal line as well as some unreal pieces of goalkeeping by Riona Keaney.

There was some great defensive work on show throughout, Keaney the last line, showing super hands, calm and controlled clearances while thwarting a number of goal attempts.
Rhianne McGuinness moved to full back to assist sister Ciara with Siofra McAloon returning to the corner. The three of them all cut out several dangerous moments with hands in to beat away the ball or else, they got to the ball first to claim possession as move upfield.
Sam Martin, Mikayla Maguire and Cara Gray seen plenty of the ball in what was a strong half back line, claiming kickouts and supplying good balls into the forward line while working hard on and off the ball. Ciara Nolan and Niamh McAloon did sterling work in the middle of the field, curtailing the involvement of their opposite number who had did well in the previous meeting while Rachel Nolan, Eimear Gray and Lisa Lavery all battled gamely in attack.
Eve Barrett, Scarlett O’Connor and Sinead Barrett where on form from early doors, swooping on several loose balls, making great runs to secure possession and this trio worked some neat moves between themselves, particularly late in the game to secure the win.

Belcoo had the wind in the first half, Sinead Barrett would have two good chances to score but it was third time lucky on 16minutes when she kicked what was the only score of the first period. Mikayla Maguire working a short free to Barrett who turned and split the posts.
The hosts had moved the ball well down the channels with Sam Martin, Cara Gray, Scarlett O’Connor and Eve Barrett to the fore as they took the game to Knockninny. The hosts going close with a few shots in what was difficult shooting conditions. At the back, super work in defence was the platform for the O’Rahilly’s good spells in attack and at half time, Knockninny hadn’t registered a score.
In the second half Knockninny tied proceedings after 8minutes before Keaney made a fabulous save to deny a certain goal. Our defence continued to apply great disciplined tackles and with the game beginning to open up. Belcoo started to have more joy moving forward down the right side in particular. A good move with Martin, O’Connor and Eve Barrett seen Sinead Barrett slot over a point.

Good pressure by Rachel Nolan then forced a turnover on the left, Ciara Nolan and Niamh McAloon were involved in the build up as Scarlett O’Connor was fouled. Sam Martin narrowly missing the placed ball.
Belcoo though would open up a two point gap with four minutes to play. Rhianne McGuinness begun the move, Sam Martin, O’Connor, Lisa Lavery and Eve Barrett were involved as they kept the ball away from Knockninny players before Sam Martin played a cross field ball to Eimear Gray who caught and swing over a fantastic score, her first of the season and it proved to be the winning one at the finish.
Knockninny pressed hard, they did strike back for 0-3 to 0-2 and had four or five good opportunities in the dying minutes to level matters but Belcoo dug deep, blocked balls and seen out the final moments to secure the one point win.
Belcoo now play Devenish in the final part of this playoff saga in Garrison at 7pm under lights on Monday 16th. Bus will be leaving at 6.10pm.
